Karoline Leavitt to Step Down as White House Press Secretary
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt will leave her role at the end of August in order to spend more time with her family, while continuing to work as an outside adviser.
Trump praised Leavitt as "one of the best White House Press Secretaries in the History of the Office," adding that she would be an influential Republican voice ahead of the midterms.
Leavitt, 28, called the decision "bittersweet," saying she could not be the mother her two children deserve while handling the demands of the press secretary role.
Republican narrative
Karoline Leavitt deserves nothing but praise for her time as press secretary, handling one of the toughest jobs in Washington with grace and discipline. She made history as a young leader and role model for women everywhere, all while balancing motherhood. Stepping down to focus on family is a decision that only proves her character even more.
Democratic narrative
Leavitt spent her tenure gaslighting the public and spinning Trump's falsehoods as fact, using the podium to attack reporters instead of answering them. Claiming the country is more affordable while Americans struggle with ever higher prices is dishonest messaging that defined her time in the role.
Nerd narrative
There's a 50% chance that the Trump administration will impose significant federal price controls before Jan. 20, 2029, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
BMJ Retracts COVID Excess Deaths Study Over 'Misinformation'
BMJ Public Health on Tuesday retracted a 2024 study on excess mortality in Western countries following the COVID-19 pandemic, citing "misinformation on causes of death and limited original work conducted by the authors."
The study, led by Saskia Mostert of the Princess Maxima Center, analyzed data from 47 Western countries and found more than three million excess deaths between 2020 and 2022.
An expression of concern was posted in June 2024, shortly after publication, noting the research did not establish a causal link between COVID-19 containment measures, vaccination and excess deaths.
Narrative A
The BMJ twisted excess mortality data to smear vaccines, misquoted studies on autoimmune risk, buried real-world evidence showing vaccines saved over a million lives in Europe and lifted data from other scientists without credit. Journals cannot let junk science with plagiarized numbers pose as legitimate research just because it gets picked up by anti-vaccine crowds. The retraction was two years late but absolutely warranted.
Narrative B
Nothing was wrong with the methodology, data or analysis in this paper, yet the BMJ yanked it anyway over a vague complaint about the discussion being unbalanced. That call came only after media coverage annoyed editors, not during peer review, proving this was a political retraction in the name of science. Bowing to outside pressure like this sets a dangerous precedent for research everywhere.
Nerd narrative
There's a 50% chance that COVID-19 will be eradicated by 2098, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
AI Agents Breached Taiwan Govt, Nuclear Agency, Report Finds
Taiwan's Ministry of Digital Affairs said Thursday that its cybersecurity monitoring units detected an "abnormal attack" on government agencies starting July 20, describing the source as overseas and the incident as successfully handled.
Israeli cybersecurity firm Dream said in a blog post on Wednesday that AI agents worked together over four days to steal passwords and personnel records from a justice ministry, and to scan a nuclear safety agency for vulnerabilities.
The Financial Times, the first outlet briefed on Dream's findings, identified the targeted government as Taiwan, though Dream itself declined to name the country, citing company policy.
Narrative A
Taiwan cannot keep relying on outdated cyber defenses while China launches millions of intrusions daily and AI-driven offensive tools race ahead of countermeasures. A domestic AI cyber shield, built with partners like the U.K. or U.S., is the only realistic way to protect critical infrastructure before a crisis hits. Waiting any longer just hands Beijing the advantage in a fight that could start online before a single missile ever flies.
Narrative B
Taiwan doesn't need flashy AI shields — it needs the same steady, whole-of-society resilience it builds for typhoons and quakes. Real security comes from cohesion, sturdy infrastructure, and recovery capacity, not unproven tech bets. For Taiwan, cyber defense is survival facing relentless attacks and severed cables, it has built defenses that endure. As the U.S. counters China's hybrid warfare, Taiwan stands ready to partner in digital security.
Nerd narrative
There is a 60% chance China will carry out a cyberattack on Taiwan’s electricity infrastructure before 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Israeli Settlers Besiege Palestinian Homes in West Bank's Qusra
Israeli settlers have besieged the homes of at least two Palestinian families in the West Bank town of Qusra since Sunday, cutting off their water and electricity supplies, as well as using other intimidation tactics, in an effort to force the families out of their properties.
In footage that was circulated on social media, the Israeli soldiers that arrived at the scene earlier this week were seen praying with the settlers, with the Israeli military saying they would be disciplined.
According to reports in Israeli media, U.S. administration officials were furious with Israeli counterparts over the lack of a response. As the reports emerged on Wednesday, Israeli military units were deployed to Qusra to disperse the settlers, but the plans were reportedly leaked, prompting the arrival of additional settlers and resulting in clashes and the use of tear gas.
Left narrative
Though the settler movement represents a minority of Israeli society, violent settlers have displaced Palestinians from their homes in the West Bank in growing numbers. According to the U.N., over 5,900 people have been displaced from their homes due to settler violence since 2023. While condemnations are issued, the Israeli system in fact does very little to curb these illegal actions, and more must be done to prevent violence against innocent Palestinians.
Right narrative
Yet again, the left-wing media is promoting the myth of the "violent settler." The Arabs of Qusra frequently throw stones and shoot at Israelis, and they were also recently involved in the lynching of a Jewish shepherd. Indeed, the settlers in Judea and Samaria aren't "provoking" these Palestinians. Rather, they are defending themselves and Israel more broadly from terrorism.
Pro-Trump narrative
It is a lie to say that the White House "intervened" in Qusra because the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem kept Washington apprised of the situation from the beginning. Nonetheless, these are horrific acts of terror meant to intimidate and harass and there is no excuse for such thuggish behavior.
Pro-Palestine narrative
Though the Israeli and Western media try to portray settlers as a fringe element of Israeli society, the state was founded on the basis of ethnic cleansing and land theft. Israeli leaders on the left and right have continued to approve settlement expansion, and Palestinian land has continued to recede since 1948. Israeli politicians are also increasingly open about Israel's intentions — the incremental destruction of Palestine.
Nerd narrative
There's a 25% chance that Benjamin Netanyahu will cease to be Prime Minister of Israel during 2026, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Ex-SPLC Director Beirich Arrested, Charged in Fraud Scheme
Heidi Beirich, former SPLC Intelligence Project director, was arrested Wednesday in California and charged with wire fraud conspiracy, conspiracy to submit false bank statements and money laundering conspiracy.
A superseding indictment filed in the Middle District of Alabama accuses Beirich of helping the SPLC funnel over $4 million in donor funds to informants inside extremist groups between 2007 and 2023.
Attorney General Todd Blanche said Beirich helped open bank accounts under fictitious company names to make payments "for reasons that were not accurate as described."
Left narrative
Heidi Beirich stood up against hate groups and defended democracy while the Trump DOJ came after her with bogus fraud charges. This prosecution is nothing but political payback in the name of justice, targeting someone whose only crime was fighting white supremacy. The timing and target make it obvious this is a weaponized witch hunt.
Right narrative
The SPLC built an empire on manufactured outrage, and Heidi Beirich was funneling donor cash to a neo-Nazi informant while living with and sleeping with him. This was never about fighting hate, it was a grift that got rich off Charlottesville and smeared conservatives as Nazis to keep the donations flowing.
Nerd narrative
There is a 1% chance Donald Trump will be jailed or incarcerated before 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Brazil Orders Discord to Suspend Livestreaming Over Teen Suicide
Brazil's National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) ordered Discord to suspend its livestreaming feature within three business days in a statement released on Wednesday, citing failures to protect children from content promoting violence, self-harm and suicide.
The ANPD investigation began after a 13-year-old girl in Mato Grosso do Sul died by suicide following a roughly 45-minute Discord livestream during which she was allegedly encouraged to harm herself by participants in the stream.
Authorities say five teenagers were arrested in connection with the girl's death, and a separate police operation rescued another girl who was allegedly preparing to commit suicide live online. Child sexual abuse material (CSAM), weapons, and material related to neo-Nazism were seized in the latter case.
Pro-government narrative
Discord has become the venue of choice online for groomers, sextortionists, and all those who seek to harm children. Organized and sadistic grooming groups, like 764, have victimized countless minors globally thanks to the negligence of Big Tech. Discord in particular has supercharged their activities, and allows criminals unrestricted access to minors thanks to their lax moderation.
Government-critical narrative
Banning livestreaming does nothing but hand government more control over digital platforms while criminals just hop to another app. Brazilian authorities are disturbingly eager to exert government power over social media, including expanding liability to the point of encouraging preemptive censorship. Parents must be trusted to protect their kids; government intervention misses the point.
Trump Sued Over Truth API's Paid Early Access to Posts
The Intercept and Freedom of the Press Foundation sued President Donald Trump on Aug. 12 in the Southern District of New York, calling the Truth API subscription plan "extraordinary, corrupt and unconstitutional."
The lawsuit names Trump, aides Natalie Harp and Daniel Scavino, the Executive Office of the President and the White House Office as defendants, alleging violations of the First and Fifth Amendments.
Truth API, launched Aug. 1 by Trump Media & Technology Group, charges subscribers $60,000 to $100,000 monthly for faster access to posts from Trump and nine other top accounts, including JD Vance and Karoline Leavitt.
Anti-Trump narrative
Trump is cashing in on the presidency itself, selling early peeks at his own government announcements to Wall Street traders. That is extortion, letting rich firms buy an edge over ordinary Americans and reporters who deserve equal access to official statements. Every citizen, not just paying subscribers, has a right to know what the government is saying at the same time.
Pro-Trump narrative
Truth API just distributes already-public posts fractionally faster, the same kind of subscription service countless news outlets and platforms offer every day. Left-wing activists and media groups are twisting this normal business practice into a lawsuit meant to silence Trump and hurt shareholders of his struggling company. Selling fast data feeds is common practice on Wall Street, not some corrupt scheme.
Reports: Multiple USS Lincoln Sailors Tried to Go Overboard
Navy Times and Stars and Stripes on Wednesday reported multiple attempts by sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln to jump overboard, including one reported incident where watchstanders restrained a crew member before they went over the side.
The USS Abraham Lincoln has spent more than 250 consecutive days at sea, a modern-day record, after being redirected from the Pacific to the Middle East ahead of the U.S.-Iran war that began in late February.
According to Stars and Stripes, a spouse told acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao at a San Diego town hall that her husband had messaged that he "hopes he doesn't wake up tomorrow."
Democratic narrative
American sailors are stuck at sea for more than eight months with moldy showers, broken toilets and rationed food, and some are so desperate they tried to jump into the sea. Nobody signs up for indefinite deployments with no end date and grueling hour shifts. Congress needs to step in and demand answers before more service members break under the strain they've suffered under the Trump administration.
Republican narrative
Signing up for the Navy means accepting hardship, and anyone who can't handle a long deployment probably should not have enlisted in the first place. The whole overboard story seems overblown anyway, since the vessel lacks railings and even aircraft have rolled off the edge during turns. This looks like a stretched narrative rather than an actual crisis.
Nerd narrative
There's a 25% chance that a U.S. aircraft carrier will be destroyed in combat before 2050, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Japan's Takaichi Protests Putin's Kuril Islands Visit
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Iturup Island — known as Etorofu in Japan — in the disputed Kuril chain, for the first time in his rule, on Thursday "absolutely unacceptable" and incompatible with Tokyo's position that the islands are "inherently Japanese territory both historically and under international law."
The four southern Kuril islands, known in Japan as the Northern Territories, were annexed by the Soviet Union in 1945 and prevented the conclusion of a peace treaty. About 17,000 Japanese residents were deported then, and bilateral ties worsened after Japan's sanctions over Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Japan maintains the islands are its territory historically and under international law based on a 1855 treaty. Russia administers them with a population of about 20,000 and has increased its military presence, including air bases on Iturup.
Anti-Russia narrative
The Kuril Islands belong to Japan, so Putin setting foot on Etorofu is a calculated move to normalize an illegal occupation and prove Moscow only respects force. The world needs to condemn this provocation and tighten sanctions before the aggressor thinks this playbook works elsewhere.
Pro-Russia narrative
Japanese officials can complain all they want, but the Kuril Islands were, are and will remain Russian territory. No amount of protest or historical argument changes that reality on the ground. Anyone who refuses to accept this fact will face serious consequences.
Nerd narrative
There's a 0.2% chance that Russia will lose control of the Kuril Islands before 2028, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Flock Safety Tightens Privacy Rules
Flock Safety announced Thursday that a criminal case number will be required before conducting searches by year's end for all police forces. This comes in light of privacy concerns regarding the AI security camera system, including reports of law enforcement misuse.
Flock is also making its Audit Assistance tool mandatory for all customers, which flags abnormal search behavior for review and suspends use of the system. About a third of agencies had used it voluntarily.
Flock, whose automated license plate readers are used by over 6,000 U.S. law enforcement agencies, is reducing data retention from 30 days to seven for data not tied to a case number. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said this exceeds their recommended 48-hour limit.
Narrative A
Flock cameras track every driver, every day, whether or not anyone did anything wrong, turning ordinary trips into government surveillance data. Deputies and police chiefs have abused these databases to stalk exes, track women seeking abortion care and harass innocent people. This is a dragnet that cannot be reformed, only rejected.
Narrative B
Flock never gets credit for the missing persons found or crimes solved, something the system is amazingly powerful at. Social media misinformation necessitates the company clarifying what this game-changing technology actually does. Flock doesn't own the data collected and most law enforcement agencies use the technology responsibly. Flock is an invaluable law enforcement tool.
