Study: Canadian Families Now Spend More on Taxes Than Necessities

The Facts

  • A Fraser Institute study published on Thursday found the average Canadian family spent 41.9% of its income on taxes in 2025, compared to 36% on food, shelter and clothing combined.

  • In 1961, the average family paid 33.5% of its income in taxes and 56.5% on necessities. By 2025, those proportions had reversed, with taxes exceeding basic living costs.

  • According to the study, the total tax bill of the average Canadian family has risen 2,928% since 1961, outpacing shelter costs (2,349%), food (952%), clothing (526%) and the Consumer Price Index (946%).

The Spin

Government-critical narrative

Taxes have officially outpaced food, shelter and clothing combined for the average Canadian family, eating up 41.9% of income. That tax bill ballooned almost 190% since 1961 after inflation, growing way faster than paychecks ever did. And for what? Pothole-filled roads and a health care system that's impossible to actually use? Governments need to cut taxes now and let families keep their own hard-earned money instead of funding bloated, poorly designed programs.

Pro-government narrative

Taxes matter, but the Fraser Institute's tally ignores the government's broader affordability strategy cutting taxes for 22 million Canadians, suspending the fuel excise tax, reducing housing costs and delivering grocery relief. The answer is not simply less government, but smarter spending, fairer taxes and stronger growth. That means protecting programs families rely on while building the investment and prosperity needed to lower costs over time.

Mali Pardons Alleged French Spy

The Facts

  • Mali's President Assimi Goita on Thursday pardoned French embassy official Yann Vezilier, who had been sentenced to 20 years for alleged spying. The military government said the pardon does not overturn the trial's findings and ordered his removal from the country.

  • France's foreign ministry had previously rejected the espionage accusations against Vezilier, saying he was carrying out a security cooperation mission. Malian officials said he acted on behalf of French intelligence to mobilize actors against the government.

  • The pardon comes as Mali's army said 82 soldiers held hostage since nationwide attacks on April 25 were released by al-Qaeda-linked Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) and the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA). The FLA said the release was carried out for humanitarian reasons.

The Spin

Pro-government narrative

Mali's government made the right call by cutting France loose, since French spies got caught red-handed plotting a coup with army generals and soldiers to derail the country's transition and destabilize the government. Turning to Russia for security backup makes sense when France fuels instability and then denies the involvement of its own agents. Pardoning the spy while keeping the conviction on record shows strength and restraint.

Government-critical narrative

France's rejection of spying claims deserves to be taken seriously, since Mali's junta has jailed a former prime minister for a social media post and dissolved every political party while elections keep getting postponed to 2030. Leaning on Russian mercenaries has not stopped jihadists from choking Bamako with fuel blockades and nearly seizing the capital. Blaming Paris for a security collapse the junta itself cannot fix is a convenient excuse.

Nerd narrative

There's a 16% chance that there will be a successful coup in Africa or Latin America before Sept. 1, 2026, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Vance: Lower Oil Prices for Americans Top Goal of Iran War

The Facts

  • U.S. Vice President JD Vance told Fox News Thursday that the administration's top goal in the Iran conflict is keeping oil and gas prices low for Americans, while preventing Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon ranks second.

  • "I know that oil is down today ... That's goal number one. Keep oil and gas cheap for Americans all over our country. And then obviously, goal number two is [to] ensure that Iran never gets a nuclear weapon. I feel confident we're accomplishing both," Vance said.

  • Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the U.S. is going to apply new measures against Iran that have "never been seen" in history, adding that it will be "a combination of economic isolation" and "the continued blockade in the Strait of Hormuz."

The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

Squeezing the Strait of Hormuz is a smart strategy to choke Iran's oil money and freeze its assets, forcing Tehran to abandon its nuclear program without another shot being fired. Draining the regime dry while keeping global oil steady is how America wins without a prolonged war.

Anti-Trump narrative

Trump sold the Iran conflict as preventing nuclear proliferation, yet Vance just admitted cheap gas ranks above this. That flip hands Tehran leverage it never had before, since Washington has basically confessed gas prices matter more than a nuclear Iran.

Nerd narrative

There's a 5% chance that Iran will possess a nuclear weapon before 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Netanyahu Calls Britain 'Islamic Republic'

The Facts

  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu referred to Britain as the "Islamic Republic of Britain" during a podcast interview with Avi Harush, a former military officer who lost his son in Gaza, released this week.

  • Netanyahu said "someone" had claimed that the first Islamic republic with nuclear weapons would be Britain, adding that Israel was "making sure there won't be another one" in Iran.

  • Netanyahu's remark echoed a 2024 comment by U.S. Vice President JD Vance at a National Conservatism Conference, in which he described the U.K. as the first "truly Islamist country" likely to obtain nuclear weapons.

The Spin

Narrative A

Netanyahu’s sneer about an “Islamic republic of Britain” is as absurd as it is insulting. After years of British diplomatic cover, intelligence cooperation and extraordinary efforts made in Israel’s favor, such baseless mockery exposes not Britain’s failings, but the breathtaking ingratitude and recklessness of Netanyahu’s own rhetoric.

Narrative B

Britain has been overseeing growing Islamist influence for years while so-called leaders sell out the country to appease a growing extremist movement. This was surely a legitimate warning from someone who has spent a lifetime fighting Islamic extremism. Exposing the politicians and media figures covering this up is long overdue for Britain.

Nerd narrative

There is a 0.1% chance Israel will recognize the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan before 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Google Launches Gemini 3.7 Flash Amid Pro System Delays

The Facts

  • Google launched Gemini 3.7 Flash on Thursday, three weeks after releasing Gemini 3.6 Flash. The company has yet to deliver its promised flagship Gemini 3.5 Pro system, which has missed at least four consecutive internal deadlines.

  • The system scored 43.6% on FrontierCode 1.1 and 65.3% on DeepSWE v1.1, compared with Gemini 3.6 Flash's 34.4% and 49.0%, respectively. It also showed improved performance on web development and complex document processing.

  • Gemini 3.7 Flash scored 30.4% on AutomationBench, up from 17.0% for its predecessor. The benchmark, published by workflow automation company Zapier, tests AI agents across six business domains using deterministic scoring in live environments.

The Spin

Narrative A

Gemini 3.7 Flash signals a shift in AI development toward cost-efficient, continuously running agents rather than flashy benchmark wins. When cheaper systems get this capable, agent workloads compound savings across thousands of tool calls and retries, making affordability the real competitive edge. The system's stronger multi-step reasoning and reduced need for developer oversight make it a genuinely powerful step forward.

Narrative B

Dropping a new Flash system just three weeks after the last one looks more like a PR move than a meaningful leap forward — benchmark jumps are modest, and Google still hasn't delivered the flagship 3.5 Pro it promised for June. Rapid-fire releases may be masking a slowdown in genuine progress at the top end of Google's AI lineup. The quantity of releases is no substitute for the quality breakthroughs Google keeps promising.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that Google will first report that an AI system has reached or surpassed CBRN uplift level 1 before Oct. 28, 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

UK: Farage Wins Clacton By-Election

The Facts

  • Reform UK leader Nigel Farage won the Clacton by-election on Friday with 22,239 votes — 63% of the total — increasing his majority from 8,405 to 12,784. Turnout was 44%, roughly 14% lower than the 2024 general election.

  • Count Binface, a satirical character created by comedian Jonathan Harvey, came second with 9,455 votes — nearly 27% — becoming the first comedy candidate in British parliamentary history to retain a deposit.

  • Farage did not attend the official count, as Reform UK claimed Essex Police had warned him of "a credible threat." But the police denied advising any candidate to stay away and described its operation as "proportionate and robust."

The Spin

Anti-Reform Party narrative

Farage's win was a hollow stunt that cost taxpayers £250,000 while serious questions about a £5 million gift and ties to a convicted fraudster go unanswered. Major parties refused to dignify what amounted to a vanity project, leaving a satirical bin character as the main opposition. The parliamentary standards inquiry has resumed, and if sanctions follow, Clacton voters may be dragged back to the polls again.

Reform Party narrative

Farage pulled 63% on a 44% turnout — numbers that dwarf what Andy Burnham managed in his own by-election, yet the media spun it as an embarrassment. The current prime minister was installed without facing voters at all, never mind hitting those margins. Demanding a democratically elected leader answer to voters is exactly what accountability looks like, and Clacton delivered.

Nerd narrative

There's a 45% chance that Nigel Farage will cease to be the leader of Reform UK before Jan. 1, 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Record Rains Kill 8, Strand 7K in Japan

The Facts

  • At least eight people died after record rainfall struck Chiba Prefecture in eastern Japan between Thursday and Friday, with some fatalities found on flooded roads and others trapped inside submerged vehicles.

  • The Japan Meteorological Agency issued its highest-level, Level 5 emergency warning for heavy rain across 22 municipalities in Chiba Prefecture — the first time such a warning had been issued since the agency revised its weather alert system earlier this year.

  • Chiba City's Chuo Ward recorded about 367 mm of rain over 12 hours through Friday morning, roughly three times the area's average monthly rainfall for August and the highest amount recorded there since observations began in 1976.

The Spin

Climate-concerned narrative

Japan's record-breaking heat and catastrophic flooding back-to-back aren't a coincidence — this is what climate scientists have predicted. A warmer atmosphere holds more water vapor, making extreme downpours inevitable when weather systems move in. Dismissing the link between global warming and these deadly extremes ignores the physics driving these disasters.

Climate-skeptic narrative

Atmospheric CO₂ sits near 428 ppm today — a fraction of the 1,000 to 2,000 ppm that defined the most biologically abundant eras in Earth's history. Blaming floods on trace CO₂ increases of 2 to 3 ppm per year stretches far beyond what the science actually supports. Extreme weather events have always occurred, and pinning them on modern emissions ignores deep geological reality.

Government-critical narrative

Japan has spent years upgrading drainage, yet residents are paying the price again when infrastructure fails in extreme weather. Chiba Station's shopping district looked like a swimming pool after rainfall exceeded 100mm an hour. Governments cannot keep designing for yesterday's averages while today's storms intensify. If officials know the risks are changing, they must build drainage systems for the rainfall Japan is actually experiencing.

Pro-government narrative

The Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel runs roughly 50 meters underground, using kilometers of tunnels, giant storage chambers and powerful pumps to divert excess water toward the Edogawa River. Built through sustained public investment and engineering expertise, Japan's flood-control system shows the country is prepared for extreme weather through ambitious infrastructure, planning and government leadership.

Nerd narrative

There's a 45% chance that large-scale solar radiation management will be used to mitigate the effects of climate change in the 21st century, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Trump Orders Navy to Swap Hi-Tech Catapults for Steam

The Facts

  • U.S. President Donald Trump signed a national security memorandum Thursday directing the U.S. Navy to remove the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) from its newest Ford-class aircraft carriers and replace it with steam-powered catapults at a potential cost of billions.

  • The directive targets the USS Doris Miller, the fourth Ford-class carrier currently under construction, while the USS Gerald R. Ford, USS John F. Kennedy and USS Enterprise will remain unaffected. General Atomics, the EMALS manufacturer, said that work on the Doris Miller's catapults was already halfway complete.

  • General Atomics warned that altering the Doris Miller's design at this stage would introduce significant cost, schedule and integration risks. Trump's memo also cited the Navy's history of constant design changes as a key factor behind cost growth, delays and cancellations in shipbuilding.

The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

President Trump is making a smart call rooted in hard-earned operational reality. EMALS has been plagued by reliability and development problems for years, and steam is battle-tested tech the Navy ran successfully for decades. The change targets ships still under construction — not finished carriers — making this a sensible redesign, not a costly retrofit.

Anti-Trump narrative

Trump should stay out of this matter. This is a costly step backward at the worst possible moment. Steam requires 12 sailors per catapult versus two for EMALS — a crippling demand when the Navy already has roughly 20,000 unfilled billets. Burning billions to undo already-built technology hands adversaries a serious strategic advantage.

Mangione Pleads Guilty in UnitedHealthcare CEO Murder

The Facts

  • Luigi Mangione, 28, pleaded guilty on Friday to two federal stalking charges in connection with the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was shot outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel on Dec. 4, 2024.

  • Mangione pleaded guilty to one count of interstate stalking resulting in death and one count of stalking through use of interstate facilities resulting in death, both carrying a maximum sentence of life in prison.

  • In court, Mangione said he posed as an investor to contact UnitedHealthcare leadership and obtain details about its annual investor conference, receiving a response within an hour. He also told the court he used a 3D printer to manufacture a firearm fitted with a silencer. Describing the shooting itself, Mangione said, "I shot Mr. Thompson and he died," adding, "I knew what I was doing was illegal."

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Murder is not activism, and no grievance with the health care system justifies killing another human being. The Thompson family deserves justice, and Mangione's guilty plea is a step toward it. His sentence now must reflect the full weight of the crime. This plea may be Mangione's Hail Mary to avoid life without parole, but there's no guarantee the judge will show leniency after he admitted deliberately going to New York to kill Thompson.

Establishment-critical narrative

Mangione accepted responsibility, yet the system is prosecuting him twice for the same act — that's a clear double jeopardy violation under New York law. Years of debilitating pain and a broken health care system pushed him to a breaking point that thousands of Americans recognize. The state charges must now be dismissed.

Narrative C

This federal guilty plea may not end Mangione's legal fight. Even if double jeopardy blocks the state murder trial, Manhattan prosecutors could still pursue the separate state weapons charge and seek a consecutive sentence — potentially giving them another bite at the apple after seeing what sentence Judge Garnett imposes federally.

Colombia Rejects Mexico's Earthquake Rescue Assistance

The Facts

  • Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed Thursday that Colombia requested additional certifications before authorizing the entry of Mexico's military rescue brigade to help following Monday's earthquake, despite the team having deployed to more than 98 countries. The brigade remained on standby in Mexico.

  • Mexico sent 58.5 tons of humanitarian aid to Colombia via Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft, carrying food, water and medical supplies. On a return flight, one military aircraft evacuated 36 Mexican nationals from vulnerable situations, all of whom landed safely.

  • Topos Azteca, a Mexican volunteer search-and-rescue group with roots in the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, deployed roughly 20 members to Cali. The Topos Tlatelolco brigade separately postponed its trip due to Colombia's international emergency entry requirements.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Colombia's response to a devastating earthquake shows real leadership, with newly elected de la Espriella coordinating targeted international aid from trusted global partners. The Israeli 'Alliance of Friends' delegation alone brings 80 specialists ready to hit the ground running in Cali. Focused, coordinated response beats a chaotic flood of teams every time.

Establishment-critical narrative

Colombia is turning away the world's most elite rescue teams — Japan, Spain, Mexico's renowned topos — while hundreds remain missing and the death toll climbs past 280. Limiting aid to a short list of political allies during a mass casualty disaster is a choice that costs lives. Geopolitical loyalty has no place in a rescue operation.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that at least 63,400 people will die as a result of the most deadly earthquake from 2020 - 2029, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
