U.S.-backed transition talks, along with its three-phase plan for Venezuela, deserve full credit for helping Machado return safely. Diplomacy that frees prisoners and welcomes exiles home beats bluster and isolation every single time. This approach offers the best chance in a generation for free elections and a democracy built to last in Venezuela.
Venezuela's authoritarian rulers sought to block the main opposition leader's homecoming in a bid to shrink her political capital, but all it achieved was the reverse. Heavy-handed delays fueled public anger and boosted Machado's standing. Power maintained through intimidation cannot match the legitimacy of a movement that still commands loyalty.
Months of comfort abroad cannot pass as sacrifice or proof of popular heroism. A quiet church stop without supporters cannot be sold as Machado's triumphant popular return. Genuine political strength appears only through organized public backing, and her homecoming supplied none.
