Version 7.18.3
Patient, U.S.-brokered negotiation with Venezuelan forces is proving far more effective than ultimatums or saber-rattling. Each round chips away at the machinery of repression and builds institutions capable of running a credible vote. Support for this process is the surest path to a peaceful democratic transition.
Applauding talks while peaceful demonstrators are hauled off to jail hands a dictatorship exactly the legitimacy such a government craves. Press releases about expanding political freedoms ring hollow when the same rulers defend fellow authoritarians abroad. Only sustained pressure can move a captive country toward real elections.
Dialogue is delivering what threats and foreign pressure never could: stability, institutional progress and a nation charting a future on sovereign terms. Violence loses ground every time negotiation produces agreements instead of ultimatums. Respect for Venezuelan institutions is what keeps peace advancing.
