The U.S. administration is supporting international stability by backing Machado and supporting a phased, managed transition of Venezuela towards legitimate elections. Having detained Maduro for crimes against the U.S., the road is now clear for the return of the eight million Venezuelas who fled abroad to return and participate in the selection of a democratic leader.
Anti-Maduro narrative
Barring Machado — the country's most popular opposition leader — from coming home and snatching another opposition figure off the street days earlier is not what a democratic transition looks like. Four hundred political prisoners remain locked up while an unelected caretaker clings to power in defiance of every constitutional principle. If elections really are coming, the date must be set now so that the people can have their say in sovereign governance.
Pro-Maduro narrative
Venezuela is opening a verifiable democratic transition with legal reforms, dialogue with opposition sectors and competitive elections on equal terms for all. This comes after hundreds of coercive measures aimed at strangling its economy, as well as devastating earthquakes, yet growth hit 7.14% in the second quarter. Diplomacy built on respect and no interference is the only course to delivering real results.
