A 14-nation maritime defense alliance led by Saudi Arabia is exactly the kind of collective action needed to keep global trade moving through the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandeb Strait. Iran-backed Houthis have declared a blockade on Saudi shipping and struck multiple tankers, threatening energy supplies that the entire world depends on. With 10 to 12% of global maritime trade passing through that chokepoint, letting armed militias hold it hostage is simply not an option.
Establishment-critical narrative
This coalition is more diplomatic theater than a fighting force — none of the members, from Pakistan to Turkey, actually want to go to war with Iran. The UAE and Oman sat out entirely, and the alliance has no announced ships, aircraft or enforcement mechanism. What's really happening is a group of countries positioning for future negotiations with Tehran, not a credible military deterrent to Houthi attacks on Red Sea shipping.
