This is a reckless act of self-destruction carried out at Iran's behest. Cutting off Red Sea oil exports through Bab al-Mandab only tightens the noose around the Houthis themselves. Saudi Arabia has dismantled every plot thrown at it, and this one will be no different.
The Houthis aren't escalating for sport — after decades of a crushing Saudi blockade strangling Yemen's people, a blockade-for-blockade response is the only proportionate answer available. A people under siege have every right to impose one in return.
The Houthis' ban on Saudi shipping through Bab al-Mandeb threatens a critical energy corridor just as Saudi exports increasingly rely on the Red Sea route. With the Strait of Hormuz already disrupted, the move raises concerns over oil supply, maritime security and the potential for broader regional and global economic repercussions.
