Venezuela's National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez updated the death toll from the twin earthquakes that hit the country two weeks ago to 3,342 in a post on X on Sunday.

Official figures as of Sunday also include over 6,000 people rescued, 16,740 people injured and more than 23,000 people who received treatment in hospitals or medical facilities, while over 17,000 people remain homeless after the disaster.

While there's no official count on missing people, two online citizen registries tracking people missing since the quakes report thousands of such cases, with estimates varying from over 18,000 to over 30,000 people as of Sunday.

Meanwhile, Panama City Mayor Mayer Mizrachi told Spanish news agency EFE that one out of five hidden AirTags used to monitor donations has been stuck in Maturín, hundreds of miles away from the most affected areas. In response, Caracas said a survivor who moved to the city has received the box.

Venezuela's interim President Delcy Rodríguez defended the government's military response to the earthquakes in her speech during a military ceremony marking the country's independence day on Sunday, saying that "there would be no social uprising" in the country.

No amount of official spin can cover up the fact that years of systemic corruption allowed buildings to be made of Styrofoam and that the so-called interim authorities have let soldiers loot rubble and block aid from reaching victims instead of saving lives. The Chavista regime is to blame for the tragic loss of thousands of lives after the quakes.
