One hallucinating chatbot nearly put armed Americans on a Chinese ship over cargo that never existed. Pushing an "AI Acceleration Strategy" into targeting work while analysts blend classified signals with open-source junk and no verification standard is reckless. Speed is worthless when all it does is get the Pentagon to make catastrophic decisions faster.
Pro-establishment narrative
Near misses like this are exactly why the answer is guardrails, not abandoning the technology. Washington and Beijing already agreed humans, not machines, must control nuclear decisions, so now that principle needs red lines, shared definitions of human control and an AI hotline for reporting machine-driven errors. Without those mechanisms, the next glitch could lead to a hot war.
