Billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller confirmed Tuesday that he used AI to write a Wall Street Journal op-ed criticizing U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's decision to increase government buybacks of long-term bonds, a move aimed at reducing yields.

Druckenmiller, founder of Duquesne Capital and described as a mentor to Bessent, titled the piece "Let the Bond Market Speak." He argued the Treasury should focus on reducing the primary deficit rather than intervening in the bond market.

Social media users flagged the op-ed as likely AI-generated, citing telltale phrasing. An AI detection tool called Pangram, used by news outlet NOTUS, found the piece had been written using AI.

Druckenmiller confirmed he used AI, telling NOTUS, "I'm not embarrassed by it ... I write everything using AI now for the same reason I use a calculator when I do math problems." He denied that "the whole thing" was AI-generated.

The incident renewed debate over AI disclosure norms. Earlier in May, the Financial Times appended a note to a Harvard professor's column after discovering AI had been used, citing its editorial code of conduct, which prohibits such use.

Druckenmiller's economic arguments are his own, built over 15 years of public commentary, and the ideas don't become less valid because AI helped polish the prose. Those trying to gatekeep who gets to publish opinions based on writing style are being elitist, not principled.

Using AI for anything other than basic proofreading means your writing is not purely authentic, and readers are only getting a probabilistic output of the writer's thought piece, shaped by the guardrails of an AI model. Writing is how humans transmit original thought, so offloading it to an algorithm is fundamentally different from using a calculator. At minimum, disclose it upfront and let readers decide its worth.
