EU Parliament Sues Council Over €150B Defense Loan Bypass
Euractiv this week reported that the European Parliament lodged a request with the Court of Justice on Thursday for the annulment of the SAFE regulation, challenging the Council of the EU over the €150 billion defense loan program.
The Security Action for Europe (SAFE) program was proposed by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in March 2025. SAFE aims to stimulate defense spending and boost Europe's defense industry through EU borrowing.
EU ministers gave approval to SAFE in May without consulting the European Parliament, using Article 122 of the Treaty on Functioning of the European Union (TFEU), which enables the Council to bypass Parliament in "exceptional circumstances." The article was previously used at the start of the COVID pandemic.
Pro-establishment narrative
The Commission's use of emergency powers was absolutely necessary given the existential security situation Europe currently faces. Article 122 exists precisely for these exceptional circumstances where swift action is required. Delaying critical defense investments through lengthy parliamentary procedures would undermine Europe's ability to respond to urgent threats.
Establishment-critical narrative
Von der Leyen's use of Article 122 is undemocratic overreach. Emergency powers aren't meant for routine defense policy, while sidelining elected representatives and concentrating executive power threatens EU institutional balance and erodes citizen trust in European democracy. If SAFE is to be passed, it must be done so through the proper channels.
Nerd narrative
There is an 11% chance that any country will trigger Article 50 to leave the EU before 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Egypt-Saudi Summit Addresses Gaza Crisis Amid Energy Deals
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi arrived in the city of NEOM in Saudi Arabia on Thursday for talks with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, focusing on regional developments, including the Gaza war and bilateral cooperation.
While Saudi Arabia criticized Israel’s alleged "crimes" and "genocidal acts" against the Palestinian people, Egypt condemned what it called the "continuation of illegal occupation in Palestinian territories," and its military plans, which include targeting Gaza City.
During a meeting of the Saudi-Egyptian Supreme Coordination Council, both sides also discussed ways to enhance bilateral economic ties between the Saudi Kingdom and the Arab Republic of Egypt in various areas, particularly in the industrial sector.
Pro-establishment narrative
Al-Sisi's Saudi trip highlights the deepening ties between the two brotherly nations. While both countries are advancing bilateral and regional economic integration, al-Sisi and the Saudi crown prince are committed to confronting Israel over its violations of international law, with Egypt playing a key role in mediating a Gaza ceasefire. Egypt's firm stance is not affected by its gas deal with Israel, which is economically sound and is merely an extension of the 2019 deal, not a new agreement.
Establishment-critical narrative
Al-Sisi's visit to Saudi Arabia is a shameful testament to the hypocrisy of both rulers when it comes to the suffering of the Palestinian people. Riyadh and Cairo never tire of vehemently criticizing Israel for its crimes in Gaza, while avoiding any concrete action against the Israeli regime and prioritizing economic and geopolitical interests over human lives. The most recent example is Egypt's outrageous gas deal with Tel Aviv, which reduces Egypt's criticism of Israel to absurdity.
Nerd narrative
There is a 30% chance that Egypt will experience a successful coup d’état before 2040, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Meta Signs $10B+ Cloud Deal with Google for AI Infrastructure
Meta Platforms has reportedly signed a six-year cloud computing agreement with Google worth more than $10 billion, marking the first major cloud infrastructure deal between the two technology companies.
Under the agreement, first reported by The Information, Meta will utilize Google Cloud's servers, storage, networking, and other services to support its artificial intelligence workloads and computing needs.
To make way for the investment, Meta recently offloaded $2 billion in data center assets, while forecasting annual capital expenditure would rise to between $66 billion and $72 billion "to bring additional capacity online."
Narrative A
This massive deal proves that Google Cloud is finally gaining serious ground against AWS and Azure. The 32% growth demonstrates that businesses are choosing Google's competitive pricing and AI-focused services. Landing both Meta and OpenAI as major clients illustrates that Google's cloud strategy is working perfectly.
Narrative B
Meta's deal with Google is a necessary part of the company's long-term strategy. For the time being, Google Cloud services will serve as a stopgap measure until Meta finalizes its multi-gigawatt superclusters, such as Prometheus and Hyperion, which will provide the company with a sustainable solution to its computing needs.
Nerd narrative
There is a 19% chance that the CEO of OpenAI, Meta, or Alphabet (Google) will publicly commit to specific limitations on their company’s AI system autonomy before January 1, 2027, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
US Judge Orders Dismantling of 'Alligator Alcatraz' Detention Center
A U.S. federal judge on Thursday ordered the Trump administration to halt construction, stop bringing in new detainees and effectively wind down operations at the mass detention center at the Big Cypress National Preserve in the middle of Florida's Everglades.
The site — dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz" — has faced criticism over conditions and lawsuits over civil rights concerns, and the order follows a suit brought by Friends of the Everglades, the Center for Biological Diversity and the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians over environmental concerns.
The 82-page ruling from U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams stated that the federal government and the state of Florida violated the National Environmental Policy Act in constructing the site without conducting the relevant environmental reviews.
Left narrative
This is a landmark ruling for the Everglades and is a huge relief to the millions of Americans who want to protect this natural environment and the myriad of species it protects. It also sends a clear message to the highest rungs of the U.S. government that they cannot simply ignore environmental law — the administration will be held accountable.
Right narrative
Everyone had anticipated that this judge, appointed by former President Barack Obama, would overstep her authority in an attempt to overturn President Donald Trump's immigration policies, despite the huge mandate he acquired at the last election. Just this week, another judge ruled that the Southern District doesn't have jurisdiction over the site — the state will appeal to protect its use of the site to address the immigration crisis.
Nerd narrative
There is a 50% chance that the average number of noncitizens removed annually from the U.S. for fiscal years 2026 through 2028 will be at least 461,000, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
UN Reports Famine in Gaza City
The U.N.-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) announced on Friday that parts of Gaza were experiencing a famine, saying that 500,000 people in the Strip face "starvation, destitution and death," with "catastrophic conditions" projected to expand to Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis.
The IPC's report also said that conditions in northern Gaza, where Israel plans to launch a new military offensive, are "as severe—or worse—than in Gaza Governorate [Gaza City]."
The report claimed that by the end of September 2025, 641,000 Palestinians in Gaza are expected to face catastrophic conditions (IPC Phase 5), while those in Emergency (IPC Phase 4) will likely rise to 1.14 million.
Pro-establishment narrative
Israel's aid distribution plans have already proved to be ineffective, and it's now becoming clear that famine is taking hold in parts of Gaza. Allowing a token amount of aid will not significantly improve the humanitarian situation. Indeed, both sides need to make concessions so that the ceasefire can be fully implemented and the hostages can be returned.
Pro-Israel narrative
The U.N. and other Hamas enablers continue to spread the lie that Israel has purposefully caused a famine in Gaza. The IPC changed its definition of a famine just so it could falsely claim that one is happening in Gaza. Of course, aid distribution is a problem, but that's because Hamas keeps attacking aid convoys to cynically steal food for itself. The problem, like it has been since day one, is Hamas and its enablers.
Pro-Palestine narrative
It should be clear after almost two years of grinding brutality that Israel's true goal is to destroy Gaza and starve its people. Indeed, famine is an integral part of Israel's genocidal campaign. Children are quite literally starving to death in their mothers' arms, yet the United States and the international community have failed to end this travesty.
Nerd narrative
There's a 13.1% chance that Israel will have de facto power in Gaza City on August 31, 2025, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Reports: Underground Hacking Market Targeting Car Security Systems
The Flipper Zero, a $199 handheld device originally designed for hardware exploration and wireless protocol testing, is reportedly being modified by hackers to unlock vehicles from multiple manufacturers, including Ford, Audi, Volkswagen, Subaru, Hyundai and Kia.
A Russia-based hacker named Daniel has developed "Unleashed" firmware patches that enable the Flipper Zero to execute radio frequency identification (RFID) attacks on vehicles, selling these modifications for either $600 or $1,000, depending on the version.
Daniel claims to have sold his firmware to around 150 customers over the past two years, with the software allegedly working against nearly 200 specific vehicle models, including many 2025 versions across multiple automotive brands.
Narrative A
Car theft risks demand a two-pronged response — automakers must modernize security with stronger anti-theft technology, while regulators must tightly control hacking tools like the Flipper Zero. Without both industry innovation and oversight, criminals will exploit outdated systems and freely available exploits to fuel a surge in theft.
Narrative B
The threat of devices like Flipper Zero is overstated — modern cars use rolling codes that block simple hacks. Banning these tools won't deter criminals, who already access black-market tech, but it will punish researchers and hobbyists. Real progress comes from manufacturers updating security standards, not burdensome regulations that hurt law-abiding citizens.
Powell Signals Possible September Rate Cut at Jackson Hole
U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) Chair Jerome Powell delivered his keynote address at the annual Jackson Hole conference on Friday, suggesting the central bank could potentially cut interest rates in September due to shifting economic risks.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged over 900 points following Powell's remarks, with traders pricing in approximately a 90% chance of a quarter-point rate cut in September, up more than 20% from earlier in the day.
Powell described the labor market as being in a "curious kind of balance" resulting from marked slowing in both supply and demand for workers, citing deportation efforts and widespread hiring pauses across sectors.
Anti-Trump narrative
While Jerome Powell has shown integrity in resisting Trump's loud attacks on the Fed, his rate policy must remain sober and fact-based. Today's rates are not historically high, and many critics misunderstand that. Painful economic conditions actually stem partly from Trump's own policies — tariffs, mass deportations and labor disruptions — not simply from the Fed.
Pro-Trump narrative
America faces a perfect storm $37 trillion in debt, soaring deficits, and a housing crisis shutting out most families. Powell's stubborn high rates have strangled growth, risked deflation, and sabotaged the private-sector transition the country desperately needs. Trump's push for cuts isn't reckless — it's essential to avoid a depression and secure America's economic future.
Establishment-critical narrative
The current Fed debate over Powell proves the myth of Fed "independence." The Fed has always served big banks and Washington — propping up elites, bailing out failures, and rubber-stamping mergers — while squeezing ordinary Americans. Powell's fight isn't about integrity; it's about keeping Wall Street's interests above Main Street's.
Report: US Military Prepares Strike Plans Against Mexican Cartels
Citing military sources, journalist Ken Klippenstein reported on Wednesday that the Trump administration issued a top secret planning order in late spring directing U.S. Northern Command (NORTHCOM) to prepare lethal strike options against cartel targets inside Mexico, with operations to be ready by mid-September.
The planning was allegedly discussed at a July meeting at NORTHCOM headquarters in Colorado Springs led by Colby Jenkins, the acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict.
NORTHCOM Commander Gen. Gregory Guillot is said to have also hosted Mexico's Defense Secretary Gen. Ricardo Trevilla Trejo and Navy Secretary Adm. Raymundo Pedro Morales Angeles days after the reported July meeting in Colorado Springs.
Pro-establishment narrative
Cartels have killed countless Americans through fentanyl trafficking while destabilizing entire regions. These criminal organizations operate as terrorist groups and have effectively declared war on America. Military action represents a necessary escalation to protect American lives when traditional law enforcement has failed to stem the crisis.
Establishment-critical narrative
Unilateral military strikes in Mexico would violate international law and constitute an act of aggression against a cooperative neighbor and major trading partner. Such operations could backfire by increasing violence, displacing communities who might seek asylum in the U.S., and destroying crucial bilateral cooperation on multiple fronts.
Nerd narrative
There is a 13% chance that the U.S. will deploy military forces in Mexico without the cooperation of the Mexican government before 2029, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
White House Lists Smithsonian Exhibits it Finds Objectionable
The White House on Thursday published a list of Smithsonian exhibits, programming and artwork it considered objectionable one week after it announced that eight of the institution's museums will be facing a comprehensive review of their wall text and future exhibitions.
The list was similar to a recent article in The Federalist that objected to what it called "anti-American propaganda" at several museums.
On the list, the White House criticized several exhibits, including a Benjamin Franklin exhibit that it said "focuses almost solely on slavery." Also among its list of criticisms was the American History Museum's occasional flying of the "Intersex-Inclusive Progress Pride flag."
Republican narrative
Unfortunately, much like the nation's education system, the Smithsonian has become a platform for political indoctrination rather than factual education, and it's time to reverse this trend by all means necessary. This isn't about erasing or altering anyone's history, but about providing the proper context for the events depicted and injecting positivity into the displays.
Democratic narrative
This is both a whitewashing of U.S. history and a political witch hunt against anything Trump doesn't like. It's not a coincidence that most of the content the White House found objectionable related to race, gender, slavery, immigration and people who've crossed the president in the past. This will have a chilling effect on America's art and history telling.
FBI Raids John Bolton's Home and Office in Classified Docs Probe
FBI agents on Friday morning searched former national security adviser John Bolton's Maryland home and Washington office as part of a court-authorized investigation into classified documents. Bolton hasn't been charged with any crimes.
Vice President JD Vance confirmed that the Trump administration is in the very early stages of an ongoing investigation into Bolton. In separate social media posts, FBI Director Kash Patel wrote "NO ONE is above the law," and Attorney General Pam Bondi wrote "Justice will be pursued. Always."
President Donald Trump said he didn't have early knowledge about the search, saying that he "saw it on television" in the morning. He said he expected to be briefed later in the day and called Bolton "sort of a lowlife."
Pro-Trump narrative
Considering Bolton's past careless handling of classified materials and his disrespect of the law and requests from the executive branch when he published his memoir without final government approval, it shouldn't be a surprise that the FBI has undergone this operation. The DOJ has a duty to pursue this case, which Trump had no prior knowledge of.
Anti-Trump narrative
Bolton has been a vocal Trump critic, and this investigation was previously closed by the Biden administration. It's well known that Bolton is on a lengthy list of perceived enemies kept by Patel, and Trump has often spoken publicly about prosecuting those who've opposed him and his actions. This sure smells like the weaponization of law enforcement.
Nerd narrative
There's a 31% chance that the DOJ will announce an investigation or prosecution of a Democrat who served as president, vice president, congressional leader, whip or impeachment manager before Jan. 1, 2026, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
