Shootings Leave 21 injured in Milwaukee, Near NBA Playoff Game

Shootings Leave 21 injured in Milwaukee, Near NBA Playoff Game

The Facts

  • Three seperate shootings near Milwaukee's entertainment district left at least 21 people injured on Fri. night. They took place between approximately 9pm and 11pm local time near the Deer District.

  • Three were reportedly injured in the first shooting, one in the second and seventeen in the third, which was described as an exchange of gunfire between two groups.

  • The police stated that they do not believe the incidents were connected, however, a state of emergency was declared and Mayor Cavalier Johnson issued a city-wide curfew for under-21s between 23:00-05:30 Saturday & Sunday.

The Spin

Democratic narrative

The refusal of the GOP to act on the loss of innocent lives is shameful. Dems are fighting to progress legislation to implement further gun control measures and tackle the scourge of white supremacy motivating domstic terrorism in the US. Now they need the support of the right to help protect American citizens.

Republican narrative

Although Dems routinely blame mass shootings on easy access to guns, experts believe the year-on-year increase in killings (up 40% in Milwaukee from the same time in 2021) is down to the pressures of the COVID pandemic. Increased stress in recent months has contributed to a downturn in mental health, and a rise in violence, with tragic consequences.

Buffalo Shooting Suspect Indicted by Grand Jury

Buffalo Shooting Suspect Indicted by Grand Jury

The Facts

  • Payton Gendron, the suspected attacker from Saturday's mass shooting in Buffalo, was indicted by a Grand Jury on Wed. in Erie County. He previously pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder.

  • On Thurs., prosecutors were granted more time to prepare their case against Payton, who is accused of killing 10 in a racially motivated attack at a grocery store.

  • Victims of the shooting included a police lieutenant working as a security guard and an 86-yr-old woman whose son is Buffalo's retired fire commissioner. 11 of those shot were black.

The Spin

Left narrative

This latest tragedy demands more pressure be put on lawmakers to pass sensible gun control measures. Guns have been allowed to proliferate and fall into the wrong hands in the US - even rural populations are at risk of extreme gun violence. With hateful and racist ideologies spreading via social media, legislation must be passed to stop racially-motivated attacks.

Right narrative

Gun control measures wouldn't have prevented this tragic incident, but reforms to mental health and referral services might have. School officials were already aware that the individual allegedly involved had intention of carrying out an attack, and he was referred for a mental health evaluation over a year ago. Yet he was released after a day and a half in hospital, and received no follow-up from law enforcement; why?

Narrative C

In the aftermath of this horrific event, familiar questions have been raised over how much responsibility social media companies bear in amplifying extremism. The suspect in this case was clearly inspired by online content and sought to promote his violence to others using online platforms, with those who reported the livestream of the shooting even being told by Facebook that the material didn't violate its rules. These big tech social media giants must be held accountable.

Palestinians Mark 74th "Nakba Day" Amid Outrage Over Journalist's Killing

Palestinians Mark 74th "Nakba Day" Amid Outrage Over Journalist's Killing

The Facts

  • Palestinians on Sun. held protests to commemorate the 74th anniversary of what they call "Nakba Day" – meaning "catastrophe" in Arabic – marking the day the state of Israel was founded in 1948.

  • To mark the day, Palestinian authorities emphasized their commitment to the right of return for refugees and their descendants and the right to self-determination, saying that "double standards" in the international community toward refugees from different countries must end.

  • Most Nakba Day rallies were scattered, with the day largely passing quietly. Three Arab students were arrested but only one of them remained in custody as of Sun. evening, after a clash broke out at Tel Aviv University between Arab students and Israeli counter-protestors. Both sides blamed the other for initiating the violence.

The Spin

Pro-Palestine narrative

Nakba Day not only marks a historical ethnic cleansing event in which roughly 750k Palestinians were forcibly removed from their homes, but an ongoing reality that Palestinians continue to face today. Israeli attempts to eradicate this history should be resisted.

Pro-Israel narrative

The creation of a Jewish state and sanctuary after millions of Jews were exterminated should not be called a "catastrophe." This label minimizes Jewish suffering and promotes anti-Semitic violence. It should be abolished.

Day 82: Moscow Warnings Over NATO Membership, EU Pushes Oil Sanctions

Day 82: Moscow Warnings Over NATO Membership, EU Pushes Oil Sanctions

The Facts

  • Moscow has warned Finland and Sweden that there will be far-reaching consequences if they join the western military alliance NATO. A joint application is expected soon, as Finland's government has confirmed that it plans to apply while Sweden's ruling party has dropped its longstanding opposition to joining.

  • Ukraine is continuing to consolidate its defense of Kharkiv, where opposition forces have reportedly been pushed back to the Russian border. The success may provide Ukrainian forces with a route eastwards to threaten Russian supply lines and intensify pressure on their efforts to take the Donbas region.

  • Elsewhere, EU foreign ministers are pressuring Hungary to support an oil embargo on Russia - the harshest proposed sanction yet. Hungary is the only state to oppose the measure, and has said it wants hundreds of millions of euros to mitigate the cost of banning Russian crude.

The Spin

Anti-Russia narrative

Russia's unprovoked war against Ukraine is pushing the two countries closer to NATO membership than ever before, and Moscow's threats against Finland and Sweden have backfired. As sovereign states, they're entitled to choose their own national security strategy and Russia's aggressiveness simply pushes them toward NATO.

Pro-Russia narrative

Finland invaded Russia in 1941 together with German troops. NATO's land borders with the Russian Federation will more than double if Sweden and Finland join the alliance. NATO has ignored Russia's security concerns by breaking its promise not to expand eastward in return for German reunification, and NATO's aerial bombing campaign against Yugoslavia in 1999 is proof of the organization's aggressiveness.

Nerd narrative

There is a 95% chance that Finland will join NATO by 2024, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Trump Endorses Mastriano for Governor in PA Primary

Trump Endorses Mastriano for Governor in PA Primary

The Facts

  • Trump has issued a last-minute endorsement in the GOP primary contest for governor of Pennsylvania, backing state senator and retired US Army Col. Doug Mastriano.

  • Mastriano was already leading the polls in the crowded GOP primary field, and Trump's endorsement is likely to cement his position heading into the Tues. primary.

  • Some within the GOP, however, have expressed doubts that Mastriano can win the statewide race in Nov., as he has advanced the former president's views about the 2020 election.

The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

Once again Trump's endorsement has helped to elevate the campaign of a political outsider who aims to challenge the political establishment. If history tell us anything, Mastriano - with Trump by his side - will be a force to be reckoned with in the general election.

Left narrative

Trump has thrown his endorsement behind one of the biggest proponents of his "big lie" that the election was stolen and now he faces what may prove to be his endorsement Waterloo, having also backed the unpopular Mehmet Oz. Trump is squandering key races across the Northeast with his nonsensical brand of defiant politics.

Narrative C

This is the clearest indication yet that Trump is actually no longer in charge of the MAGA movement. Could it be that he's lost control of more authoritarian forces that he unleashed within the Republican Party, making his endorsements weak and after-the-fact?

Lebanon Elections: Hezbollah Loses Majority in Parliament

Lebanon Elections: Hezbollah Loses Majority in Parliament
Photo: PBS NewsHour

The Facts

  • The Iran-backed Shia'a militant group, Hezbollah, has lost its majority in parliament in Lebanon's elections. Previously, Hezbollah and its allies won 71 seats in the last elections of 2018.

  • Lebanon headed to the polls on Sun. for the country's first elections since the 2019 "Oct. 17 Revolution" and beginning of its economic crisis, with 128 seats in Parliament up for grabs.

  • The anti-Hezbollah Lebanese Forces, which is supported by the US and Saudi Arabia, and its close allies won 21 seats, up from 15 in 2018, making it the largest Christian party in parliament.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

The Lebanese people have shown that they're fed up with Hezbollah's continued dominance over their country. Now that Hezbollah and its allies have lost their majority in parliament, the country's future may become brighter.

Establishment-critical narrative

The Free Patriotic Movement losses are due to American and Israeli interference. The West and its allies are fighting to keep a toe-hold in the Middle East and sought to undermine Lebanon's sovereignty by supporting opposition groups and the Lebanese Forces.

Cynical narrative

Though Sunday's elections present some real hope that Lebanon's corrupt political regime may change, the election itself will not have much of an impact on the country's current political and economic situation. Established political parties are far too entrenched and the corruption runs too deep for change to occur overnight, but at least the ball is now finally rolling.

John Fetterman, Senate Candidate for Pennsylvania, Suffers Stroke

John Fetterman, Senate Candidate for Pennsylvania, Suffers Stroke

The Facts

  • Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman has been hospitalized following a stroke, just two days before the state's primary election.

  • The democratic candidate tweeted that doctors were able to remove a blood clot and stabilize his heart. He also stated that he didn't suffer any cognitive damage.

  • Fetterman assured supporters that his primary campaigning would continue on Tues., claiming he was "still on track to win" the primary and flip the Senate seat in November.

The Spin

Democratic narrative

The race to replace Pennsylvania's retiring Republican Sen. Pat Toomey is one of the Dem's most significant electoral opportunities. Although this is a bump in the road, Fetterman is ready to fight in this high-stakes race.

Republican narrative

The revelation has created a cloud of uncertainty for the Democrats. Fetterman's imposing stature is a large part of his political appeal - a showing of physical weakness may boost the Republican party's chances in Pennsylvania.

Nerd narrative

There is a 75% chance that the GOP will control the US Senate after the 2022 election, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Saudi Oil Giant Aramco's Q1 Profits Soar 80%

Saudi Oil Giant Aramco's Q1 Profits Soar 80%

The Facts

  • On Sun., oil giant Saudi Aramco announced that its profits soared more than 80% in the first three months of the year, marking a record net income of $39.5B - up from the $21.7B during the same period last year.

  • This comes as the company overtook Apple to become the world's most valuable company. Aramco's shares rose by 4.7% on Sun., leaving its value at $2.64T, while Apple was worth $2.38T at Friday's close.

  • Oil and natural gas prices have surged in recent months amid tight market conditions and disruption from the pandemic, and have been further exacerbated by the conflict in Ukraine as sanctions have reduced Russian oil output.

The Spin

Narrative A

Unfortunately, OPEC has decided that the best response to global commodity panic is no response at all. OPEC is betraying its purpose of bringing stability to the oil market, and is quick to blame rising prices - from which it reaps massive profit - on the politicization of oil. However, politics have always played a role in the market, and it's time for OPEC to bring calm to a tumultuous world.

Narrative B

It's time for diplomacy; the US needs to improve its relationship with Middle East oil-producing countries. OPEC has been a useful bogeyman for lawmakers since the first oil crisis in 1973, but this is just Washington pointing its finger at someone else for the pain at the pump.

Margaret Thatcher Statue Egged Within Hours of Unveiling

Margaret Thatcher Statue Egged Within Hours of Unveiling

The Facts

  • A statue of late UK PM Margaret Thatcher was egged on Sun., just hours after being unveiled in her hometown of Grantham, Lincolnshire.

  • The former Conservative leader has proven a controversial historical political figure. Alongside the widespread privatization of public sector services, she oversaw the closure of British coal mines in 1984-85, resulting in mass unemployment and an embittered battle between striking miners and authorities.

  • The memorial was placed on a 10ft-high plinth and surrounded with temporary fencing after the local council received reports that it may be the target of far-left activists.

The Spin

Right narrative

Margaret Thatcher is a significant part of Grantham's heritage and it's only right that her influence and legacy, not only in policy but as the UK's first female PM, should be recognized and honored. Vandalism isn't a political statement, it's a juvenile way of avoiding the education and information symbolized by such a memorial.

Left narrative

This statue was always going to be a prime target for political protest. Thatcher's decimation of Northern mining communities has made her easily the most divisive PM of the last century. Putting up a statue of this controversial figure during a cost of living crisis will only prompt people to concentrate on the modern-day Tory austerity that's driving Brits to the breadline.

Nerd narrative

There is a 49% that the UK will have a Conservative PM at the beginning of 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

European Ministers Push Hungary to Support Oil Embargo on Russia

European Ministers Push Hungary to Support Oil Embargo on Russia

The Facts

  • EU leaders are struggling to convince Hungary to support an oil embargo on Russia, with Lithuania's Foreign Minister claiming Hungarian officials are holding the EU hostage with their refusal to support the sanction.

  • The ban on crude was proposed almost two weeks ago, but Hungary, which receives 65% of its oil from Russia, has said the embargo would cost the nation close to $19B.

  • Although landlocked countries heavily dependent on Russian crude were offered a delay in joining the EU ban when the measures were proposed, the sixth round of sanctions - which also includes asset freezes and travel bans on prominent supporters of Russian Pres. Putin - lack consensus.

The Spin

Narrative A

Orban's Kremlin ties are straining the relationship between Hungary and the rest of the EU's western alliance. They're holding the bloc's ability to deliver effective punitive sanctions on the Russian economy hostage, even though the EU's foreign policy chief has questioned the inconsistencies in Hungary's claims about the cost of the embargo.

Narrative B

Hungary has been clear from the start that energy sanctions are a red line, as they would decimate the economy. An embargo on Russian oil would demand the complete modernization of the nation's energy system and bring an era of economic recession that would only prompt migration and spiralling economic downturns for the rest of Europe. The Hungarian people must not be made to pay the price of the war.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that Russia's 2022 oil production will drop by less than 12% from 2021, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
