At Least 500 Deaths Uncovered at Schools for Native American Children

At Least 500 Deaths Uncovered at Schools for Native American Children

The Facts

  • A report from the US Dept. of the Interior has found that over 500 students died while attending one of 408 federally-supported boarding schools for Native American, Alaskan and Hawaiian children.

  • The schools aimed to assimilate Indigenous children and operated between 1819 and 1969.

  • The first-of-its-kind study emphasized the intergenerational trauma the schools had caused, where students were prohibited from speaking native languages and were frequently abused.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

This report marks an important step in reorientating federal policy to counteract past horrors. The federal government has revealed and is taking responsibility for how cultural erasure and the forced assimilation into white culture has continued to affect indigenous communities. This will provide a valuable roadmap towards healing.

Establishment-critical narrative

This is too little, too late. Unlike in Canada, the US government has never acknowledged how many children attended these schools that facilitated rampant physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. The federal government has sidestepped accountability for decades by failing to declare how many children died or went missing or, even, how many of these institutions existed. A formal apology and reparations are long overdue.

Biden Approves Sending 23K Trump Docs to Jan. 6 Committee

Biden Approves Sending 23K Trump Docs to Jan. 6 Committee
Photo: AP [via NPR]

The Facts

  • Biden has authorized the National Archives to hand over approximately 23K emails and other attachments from the Trump admin. to the House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riots.

  • Although Trump sent a letter in Mar. to the National Archives saying that he wanted to potentially claim executive privilege on certain documents, the collection is expected to go to the committee on May 26.

  • Trump stated in Sept. 2021 that "we will fight the subpoenas on Executive Privilege and other grounds, for the good of our country," while reiterating is claims on the outcome of the 2020 election.

The Spin

Left narrative

The attack on the Capitol was not a spontaneous event. It was a deliberate and organized attempt to overturn the will of the American electorate. With every interview, the Jan. 6 Committee gets one step closer to holding those who organized and incited the violence accountable, including the former president.

Pro-Trump narrative

Trump is trying to defend democracy, not subvert it. Biden and his campaign boasted during the 2020 campaign that they had recruited hundreds of lawyers to fight the election result in the event that they lost. Hypocritically, the Jan. 6 Committee now considers the same approach a crime when done by Trump.

Day 79 Roundup: Russian Forces Make Gains in Luhansk, EU Commits Over $500M More to Ukraine

Day 79 Roundup: Russian Forces Make Gains in Luhansk, EU Commits Over $500M More to Ukraine

The Facts

  • Ukrainian forces reportedly continued a counteroffensive in the northeastern region of Kharkiv on Friday. This comes as satellite imagery from BlackSky and the European Space Agency taken May 12 appear to show three bridges vital for the Ukrainian advance blown up, likely during the Russia retreat.

  • Elsewhere, according to military analysts, Russian forces now likely control almost all of Rubizhne in the Luhansk region, and have seized the town of Voevodivka. It appears likely that they will cease efforts to encircle Ukrainian troops along the Izyum-Slovyansk-Debaltseve line in favor of launching shallower encirclements and a ground offensive on or around Severdonetsk shortly.

  • Meanwhile, on the sidelines of the G7 meeting in Germany, EU High Repr. for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell announced Fri. that the EU will provide an additional $521M in military assistance to Ukraine. The new funds will be spent on heavy weapons.

The Spin

Anti-Russia narrative

This invasion is an egregious violation of international law. Putin's ultimate aim is to restore the Soviet empire, even if it takes massive bloodshed and false pretexts such as calling the 2014 Ukrainian revolution after a fraudulent election a "coup". This unprovoked attack is the latest chapter in Putin's Orwellian attempt to rewrite history.

Pro-China narrative

NATO and the US have ignored Russia's security concerns by breaking their promise not to expand eastward in return for German reunification. These concerns are legitimate and taking them seriously would have avoided the Ukraine tragedy.

Nerd narrative

There is a 50% chance that Ukraine will formally pledge not to join NATO before 2024, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Musk Announces Twitter Purchase is 'Temporarily On Hold'

Musk Announces Twitter Purchase is 'Temporarily On Hold'
Photo: news

The Facts

  • In a tweet Fri., Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that his $44B purchase of Twitter is "temporarily on hold." He later added that he remains committed to the acquisition.

  • Musk attributed his pause to a desire to get more details on the number of fake accounts on the platform as well as the volume of account activity that constitutes "spam."

  • Specifically, he asserted that he wants to confirm Twitter's own estimates that fake accounts make up less than 5% of users on the site.

The Spin

Narrative A

Musk is a savvy businessman. This latest gambit will either depress the price of Twitter and allow him to renegotiate the deal on more favorable terms, or allow him to walk away altogether - just as a drop in Tesla's share price has made the venture less affordable for the billionaire.

Narrative B

Twitter's board could easily say "we can't give it to Elon Musk, he'll break it!" In fact, the board should have rejected Musk's offer from the start on the perfectly legal and rational grounds that he would have irreparably harmed the company if it evolved into his newest plaything.

Qatar Leader Visits Iran in Bid to Help Salvage Nuclear Deal

Qatar Leader Visits Iran in Bid to Help Salvage Nuclear Deal

The Facts

  • Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim met Iranian Pres. Ebrahim Raisi in Tehran on Thurs. as the Gulf state seeks to help end a dispute between Iran and the US over a potential revival of the 2015 nuclear deal.

  • While Iran seeks to expand its ties with regional powers, Qatar is reportedly aiming to bring the parties involved in the Iran nuclear agreement to "a new middle ground."

  • The two leaders reportedly discussed bilateral, regional, and international issues, but further details were not reported.

The Spin

Right narrative

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard has become one of the region's most powerful and dangerous military organizations, training and arming terrorist proxies in places like Lebanon, Yemen, Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. Concessions are only going to embolden this radical organization and lead to further mayhem in the Middle East.

Left narrative

Any threat currently posed by Iran would be far worse should it obtain a nuclear weapon. Trump's withdrawal from the 2015 agreement only made that possibility more likely. These concessions are necessary in the interests of wider national security.

Establishment-critical narrative

Placing the Revolutionary Guard on its terror blacklist was the first time in history that Washington designated part of a sovereign government as a terrorist organization. Reversing this is an essential step before Iran can return to any deal.

Nerd narrative

There's 30% a chance that the US will rejoin the Iran nuclear deal before 2023, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Jan. 6 Committee Subpoenas Five House Republicans

Jan. 6 Committee Subpoenas Five House Republicans

The Facts

  • The Jan. 6 Committee has issued subpoenas to five sitting Republican lawmakers, including House Minority Leader McCarthy (R-CA), alleging that they have information relevant to its investigation of the events surrounding the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

  • The almost unprecedented move came after the GOP lawmakers refused an earlier request for voluntary cooperation with the panel's inquiry.

  • It also comes after text messages provided to the Committee by Trump's Chief of Staff Mark Meadows allegedly suggested potential collaboration with the lawmakers around the time of Jan 6.

The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

These subpoenas were leaked to the press before they were even delivered to the GOP lawmakers. This shows the degree of coordination between Democrats and the liberal media as they both conduct a partisan witch hunt. The Jan. 6 Committee is more interested in headlines than the truth.

Left narrative

Jan. 6 was an assault on the most basic tenets of American democracy that free and fair elections have consequences and the American voters get to choose their elected representatives. These lawmakers have evidence of a plot to overturn the election, and the American people deserve to know the full extent of their machinations.

Hong Kong Arrests Roman Catholic Cardinal

Hong Kong Arrests Roman Catholic Cardinal

The Facts

  • On Wed., Hong Kong officials detained a Roman Catholic cardinal and three others for allegedly colluding with foreign actors to endanger China's national security.

  • Joseph Zen, a 90-year-old retired bishop, and the others were trustees of the now-defunct "612 Humanitarian Relief Fund." They were released on bail with their passports forfeited after being questioned.

  • All three were charged under the city's national security law for allegedly asking foreign governments to impose sanctions on Hong Kong. If convicted, they could face maximum sentences of life in prison.

The Spin

Anti-China narrative

Beijing fears that any trace of freedom in Hong Kong might spread to mainland China and undermine CCP legitimacy. By arresting Zen, pro-Beijing authorities are attempting to curb religious liberty. This is their latest venture after extinguishing political dissent, freedom of the press and the independence of the judiciary.

Pro-China narrative

This is simply about law and order being correctly enforced by Hong Kong authorities. Illegal activities must be punished regardless of who takes part in them. The arrest of the 612 Humanitarian Relief Fund's trustees is justified - this was an irregular organization funded by anti-China forces.

NHS Crisis: Ambulance Waiting Times Putting Lives at Risk

NHS Crisis: Ambulance Waiting Times Putting Lives at Risk

The Facts

  • According to official figures, serious safety incidents in the UK - i.e., cases in which a lack of care or an error results in avoidable death or serious harm - have risen 77% in the past year, compared to pre-pandemic levels, amid a crisis in the NHS ambulance service.

  • There were 551 serious safety incidents in the 12 months to Mar. 2022. In one instance, a 9-yr-old girl with a fractured skull was told her ambulance wait would be 10 hrs.

  • Statistics for Mar. show that patients in the most urgent conditions waited an avg. of 9 mins and 35 secs for an ambulance, the longest time since current records began.

The Spin

Left narrative

The crisis isn't just about the backlog. There are around 110K NHS vacancies; without more funding and staff, patients will continue to suffer and die unnecessarily and the public health service will continue in a state of perpetual crisis.

Right narrative

More spending won't solve the problems of the NHS. Cheques have been written unconditionally for years, but there is seemingly no appetite for the levels of private-sector intervention that have kept people healthy and safe in other European systems. The government shouldn't be tackling a problem caused by state intervention with more state intervention. Union demands to limit working hours and patients add to the problem.

Establishment-critical narrative

Current backlogs in the NHS aren't being helped by unions like the BMA, who are demanding limits on GP patient numbers and working hours. The moves of union members will worsen waiting times and exacerbate the deterioration of emergency services.

Federal Court Reinstates Texas Social Media Censorship Law

Federal Court Reinstates Texas Social Media Censorship Law

The Facts

  • On Wed., a federal appeals court reinstated a Texas law that prevents social media platforms with 50M or more monthly users from suppressing content based on its viewpoint.

  • The bill, known as HB 20, was passed last year, but in Dec. a federal district judge issued a preliminary injunction that blocked it from being enforced, citing concerns that it violated social media companies' freedom of speech.

  • The ruling on Wed. allows Texas to begin enforcing the law while the state's appeal continues.

The Spin

Left narrative

This is an attack on freedom of speech. Wednesday's decision will allow HB 20 to be enforced before the court has even ruled on its legality, risking huge ramifications. It could reshape the rights and obligations of all websites, our relationship with technology and the internet, and even our basic understanding of the First Amendment.

Right narrative

For centuries common carrier laws have required certain industries to operate without discrimination. The new Texas law is simply applying these historical precedents to the modern public square social media. Big tech has a history of censoring content and blocking accounts it doesn't agree with, and it's time to hold them accountable.

Erdoğan Renews Threat To Block NATO's Nordic Expansion

Erdoğan Renews Threat To Block NATO's Nordic Expansion
Photo: news

The Facts

  • Türkiye agreed on Tues. to back Finland and Sweden's joint alliance membership, following urgent top-level four-way talks between the three countries and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg.

  • On Mon., Turkish Pres. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan declared that Ankara will freeze Finland and Sweden's accession to NATO unless they take the "necessary steps" to comply with their security deal with Turkey.

  • This comes after an agreement was struck last month following urgent top-level four-way talks between the three countries and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg.

The Spin

Narrative A

It would be unacceptable to have the Nordic pair in the alliance while they had close ties with anti-Turkey terrorist groups. This vow to modify policies is an important step, but it still needs to be implemented in order to tackle threats against Turkey, a long-time NATO member and its second-largest standing military,

Narrative B

Turkey has used Finland and Sweden's NATO bids to advance its racist anti-Kurdish agenda, testing how far it could go in blackmailing the alliance. NATO's future is now at risk as the alliance created to protect liberal democracies has become hostage of Erdoğan's authoritarian regime.

Narrative C

The deal reached between Finland, Sweden and Turkey reinforces NATO's position, sending a clear message to the Kremlin. The Nordic expansion of the alliance is a massive defeat to Putin, who sought to prevent the alliance's enlargement by invading Ukraine.

Nerd narrative

There is a 98% chance that Sweden will join NATO before 2024, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
