Report Finds Pattern of Discrimination by Minneapolis Police

Report Finds Pattern of Discrimination by Minneapolis Police

The Facts

  • A Minnesota Dept. of Human Rights report released on Wed. claims that the Minneapolis police dept. engages in a pattern of racial discrimination.

  • The report states that the police dept. possesses a culture "averse to oversight and accountability," and accuses its leaders of failing to correct its extensive problems.

  • Among its findings, the report claims that police disproportionately use severe force against, and perform traffic stops on, Black individuals. They are also accused of covertly tracking Black individuals and organizations online.

The Spin

Left narrative

Minneapolis police are routinely using excessive violence and addressing people with racist and misogynistic slurs, yet the force is failing to empower officers to speak out against such abhorrent behavior. Serious and urgent changes are needed to protect the civil liberties - and lives - of Black Minneapolitans.

Right narrative

Policing has been undermined beyond recognition by radical leftists. Democrats have been pushing the falsity that policing in the US is systematically racist to force through legislation attacking cops. Yet, no one talks about the violence police face everyday, including BLM and Antifa mob violence which caused $2B worth of destruction in just under a year.

Report: Trump Officials Overruled Pentagon to Approve Pandemic Loan

Report: Trump Officials Overruled Pentagon to Approve Pandemic Loan

The Facts

  • Senior Trump admin. officials overruled the Pentagon to award a $700M loan to a trucking company with Trump ties, according to a report by a House Panel.

  • The findings came as part of an 11-month probe into whether the Cares Act, a measure passed by Congress at the start of the COVID pandemic to provide support to struggling businesses, was violated by the loan being improperly issued.

  • Career officials at the DoD initally rejected the application filed by the Kansas-based trucking firm Yellow Corp., on the basis that the company wasn't critical to national security.

The Spin

Left narrative

Yellow Corp. executives acknowledged having a "hand in the cookie jar" when they were awarded this egregious loan package. It's further testament to the cronyism that characterized the Trump administration as well as its reckless disregard for taxpayer dollars.

Pro-Trump narrative

The report's allegations are not only unsubstantiated, but politically motivated. It's clear that Pentagon staff were going to recommend Yellow's eligibility before discovering a federal lawsuit against the company. Claims made by a Democratic-led House Select Subcommittee against Yellow and the practices of the Trump administration are baseless.

Establishment-critical narrative

This is just the latest example of how corporate lobbying has increasingly come to overwhelm every other countervailing force in American politics. The decline in labor unions and public interest groups has enabled an ever narrower and wealthier elite to proactively control central politics across different administrations.

Day 65 Roundup: At Least 1 Dead, 10 Reportedly Injured in Kyiv Missile Attacks; Evacuation of Mariupol Steel Plant Stalls

Day 65 Roundup: At Least 1 Dead, 10 Reportedly Injured in Kyiv Missile Attacks; Evacuation of Mariupol Steel Plant Stalls

The Facts

  • At least 1 person was killed and 10 more were reportedly injured in the Russian missile strikes that struck Kyiv on Thursday. Two missiles struck the Shevchenkivs'kyi district, Ukrainian officials said, with one striking the lower floors of a residential building and another an unspecified location.

  • In a statement on Fri., Russia's defense ministry said that high precision long-range missiles struck the Artem production facility in Kyiv. Its website, before taken down, listed the company as a joint state venture that manufactures aircraft munitions and missile defense systems. The claims couldn't be confirmed.

  • Local media identified Vera Girich, a journalist and producer for Radio Liberty, as the deceased after her body was discovered in the rubble on Friday. This was later confirmed by the station.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

The world cannot stand by as Russia continues their atrocities and aggression in Ukraine. Every day the Ukrainians are paying with their lives, and the West must contribute arms, funding, ammunition and economic support to counter Putin's war of extermination.

Establishment-critical narrative

Arming Ukraine further will only prolong the war, provoke instability in Europe, and ultimately destroy the nation. The West must act to end the war now, before nothing remains of the country they seek to protect.

Pro-Russia narrative

NATO and the US have ignored Russia's security concerns by breaking their promise not to expand eastward in return for German reunification. These concerns are legitimate and taking them seriously would have avoided the Ukraine tragedy.

Nerd narrative

There's a 3% chance that Kyiv will be under Russian control before 2023, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Report: US Left Behind $7B of Military Equipment In Afghanistan Withdrawal

Report: US Left Behind $7B of Military Equipment In Afghanistan Withdrawal

The Facts

  • US forces left behind approximately $7B of military equipment when withdrawing from Afghanistan, according to a Pentagon report viewed by CNN this week.

  • This includes around $1B in aircrafts, 12k military humvees, and nearly all the communication equipment given to Afghan forces.

  • The military gear was transferred to the Afghan government over the course of 16 yrs as part of the US military assistance to Kabul. A DoD spokesperson said that the Afghan National Forces received $18.6B worth of equipment during the period.

The Spin

Republican narrative

The Biden admin. allowed the Taliban, a terrorist organization, to get ahold of billions of dollars worth of high-tech military hardware, including aircraft and vehicles. Biden and the rest of the Democrats continue to obfuscate their failings and avoid taking responsibility for their blunders.

Democratic narrative

Though the US was forced to leave behind a sizable amount of equipment, most of it was either rendered inoperable before the end of the withdrawal or is unusable without technical maintenance and spare parts. Plus, the figure of $7B is less than half of the total $18.6B worth of equipment provided to Afghan forces since 2005.

Report: Ocean Animals Could Face Mass Extinction From Climate Change

Report: Ocean Animals Could Face Mass Extinction From Climate Change

The Facts

  • According to a study released Thurs. in the journal Science, roughly a third of all marine animals could vanish within 300 years if greenhouse gas emissions are not curbed.

  • The researchers warned that by ~2100, the rate of loss of marine animals could mirror the 'Great Dying,' Earth's deadliest extinction event. The Great Dying saw the loss of 95% of all marine species when it occurred around 250M years ago.

  • Changing conditions from climate change are believed to be killing species through warming temperatures and oxygen depletion, and are compounded by overfishing, pollution and habitat loss.

The Spin

Narrative A

This is an important paper. It adds to the huge body of evidence that, unless more is done to curb our greenhouse gas emissions, our marine systems could see extinction events that rival Earth's largest mass extinctions. If we don't do anything about this, we're in deep trouble.

Narrative B

This is an instructive, but unlikely scenario. Life in the ocean is complex and there's a lot we just don't know about marine life and changing conditions. We can't forget that species are resilient and have their own ways of adapting.

Nerd narrative

There's an 85% chance there will be at least 2˚C degrees of global warming by 2100 according to the Metaculus prediction community

US Economy: Shrinking GDP Masks a Broader Recovery

US Economy: Shrinking GDP Masks a Broader Recovery

The Facts

  • The US economy shrank at an annualized rate of 1.4% in the first 3 months of 2022 according to a new report the US Dept. of Commerce released Thurs.

  • The figures mark the first quarterly decline in GDP since Apr. 2020 - the start of the pandemic - and are in stark contrast to last year's growth rate of 5.7%.

  • Part of the decline could be explained by a surge in imports, which count against domestic economic production figures, as consumer spending rose and businesses sought to restock depleted inventories.

The Spin

Right narrative

Biden's economy is the definition of stagflation, marked by slow or even declining GDP growth and stubborn inflation. The US economy is extremely vulnerable to trade imbalances that are hurting consumers and manufacturers alike, and the Biden admin. and the Federal Reserve are to blame.

Left narrative

Economists looking at the bigger picture see plenty of signs for optimism. Consumer spending - the primary engine of the US economy - is on the rise, and so are capital investments by businesses that will spur further production gains. A recession is unlikely with such strong tailwinds.

Narrative C

For all the hand-wringing among economists, the real culprit here is the surging US dollar, which continues to gain strength against major foreign currencies like the Yen and the Euro. A strong dollar makes US exports more expensive and imports cheaper. The strength of the dollar should be top of mind for the Biden admin.

DHS Forms Disinformation Governance Board

DHS Forms Disinformation Governance Board

The Facts

  • The US Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the formation of a "Disinformation Governance Board" aimed to combat the spread of misinformation.

  • The announcement came as DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas appeared before the House Appropriations Subcommittee to discuss the department's 2023 fiscal budget.

  • Misinformation, according to Mayorkas, refers to any falsehood that's presented as true in order to deceive.

The Spin

Right narrative

Leftist politicians are heavily involved in efforts to label anything counter to their narrative as "disinformation." The sole purpose of this dystopian government agency is to further censor and silence free speech, especially the free speech of the conservative and dissenting voices that are most needed right now.

Left narrative

Republicans are a party addicted to lying to themselves, so this Board is a necessary evil at this moment in history. Yes, the name of the organization leaves something to be desired, and yes, the prospect of this sort of a government agency under a future President DeSantis (for example) is disturbing. But we need this, right now.

Cynical narrative

This isn't about right or wrong, or right or left, but rather if this new Board can even function. People are generally fueled by confirmation bias and will continue to believe whatever narrative aligns with their existing political views.

WHO/UNICEF: ‘Perfect Storm’ Conditions Leading To Measles Surge

WHO/UNICEF: ‘Perfect Storm’ Conditions Leading To Measles Surge

The Facts

  • The WHO and UNICEF have warned of a "perfect storm" of conditions that are causing an increase in measles cases by 80% worldwide compared to the same period last year.

  • The COVID pandemic has led to a diversion of resources, while conflicts around the globe have disrupted health care systems and forced people from their countries, leading to a decrease in immunizations in children.

  • At the same time, many countries are lifting COVID restrictions, putting unprotected children at risk in public settings.

The Spin

Right narrative

The overly sanitized conditions of life at home during pandemic lockdowns and school closures have significant blame for any uptick in child disease. Being locked down set back immune development for kids by keeping them from encountering pathogens they would ordinarily fight off.

Left narrative

There were always anti-vax hucksters, but COVID increased their ranks and social media helps them spread their misinformation with tragic results. Sure, locking down kids had an effect, as have disruptions in the health care systems, but the unlimited free speech of trolls and online goblins has done the most to pave the way for the return of measles.

ESPN Anchor Sues Network on Free Speech Grounds

ESPN Anchor Sues Network on Free Speech Grounds

The Facts

  • On Thu., ESPN anchor Sage Steele filed a lawsuit against the network and its parent company, Disney, for allegedly violating her freedom of speech by penalizing for comments she made on a podcast.

  • Last year, Steele denounced vaccine mandates as "sick" and also questioned former Pres. Obama's choice to identify as black - rather than biracial - on former NFL player Jay Cutler's "Uncut" podcast.

  • The lawsuit claims that Steele was forced to issue an apology over her comments and that she was intentionally kept off top assignments.

The Spin

Left narrative

While Steele is entitled to her opinions, it doesn't mean that she should say whatever she wants without accountability. Steele represents ESPN and has a duty to uphold its image.

Right narrative

Steele is rightly standing up for her freedom of speech. ESPN unfairly punished her due to a faulty understanding of comments that had no interference with her performance or working relationship with the company.

British Virgin Islands Premier Arrested on Drugs Charges

British Virgin Islands Premier Arrested on Drugs Charges

The Facts

  • Andrew Fahie, premier of the British Virgin Islands (BVI), was arrested at the Miami airport on drug smuggling and money laundering charges, according to information released by the DEA on Thursday.

  • Fahie, 51, was detained by US agents posing undercover as Mexican drug cartel members. The investigation began several months prior, in the fall of 2021.

  • He's accused of agreeing to help a federal informant - posing as a Sinaloa cartel member - move thousands of kilos of cocaine through the BVI's port in exchange for a payment of $700k.

The Spin

Narrative A

The arrest confirms the recently released UK report about the overall state of corruption and misuse of taxpayers' money. It's time for the current government to be dissolved. The UK should take back control until good governance can be re-established.

Narrative B

While this is appalling behavior from two high-level government officials, it doesn't reflect the nation or the government as a whole and shouldn't be used to justify the suspension of the BVI's constitution - a move that would be a step back for democracy.

Narrative C

The arrest of two high-level officials on drug-related charges sends a clear message anyone involved in smuggling drugs into the US will be prosecuted, no matter who they are or what their position is. This is a win for the DEA.

Report: UK Should Take Back Rule of British Virgin Islands

Report: UK Should Take Back Rule of British Virgin Islands

The Facts

  • A report released on Fri. recommends that the UK temporarily take back direct rule of the British Virgin Islands (BVI) amid alleged failures in government.

  • The report concludes a 2021 UK-appointed commission of inquiry which found widespread abuse, including millions of state funds spent without proper process.

  • While the UK is already in charge of the BVI's defence and foreign policy, Gov. John Rankin - Queen Elizabeth's representative on the island - is now expected to take over its domestic policies and budgets.

The Spin

Establishment-critical narrative

While the report raises valid concerns, the recommendations must be viewed with an objective eye. Suspending the BVI's constitution isn't in the best interest of the island's citizens, and will be a step back for its democracy. There are other methods that should be considered first.

Pro-establishment narrative

The report doesn't make its recommendations lightly. The only way to tackle the confirmed failures of government is to move forward with the BVI's suspension of powers. Without drastic measures, the current situation will go on indefinitely.
