Iran delivered Trump a strategic defeat on the battlefield and in the Strait of Hormuz, turning his war into a political liability in Washington. Americans paid the price through soaring fuel costs and billions in spending. The election was a resounding rejection of U.S. warmongering, yet Trump's vow to wage the war again exposes the arrogance Tehran has long opposed.
Trump’s push to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon reflected a core national security priority, not a departure from America First. The challenge now is explaining the costs, the strategy and the stakes to voters. Republicans should defend the decision on its merits, address concerns over U.S. commitments to Israel and resist calls to retreat toward the Democrats’ approach.
Blaming the Iran war alone is an easy but deeply misleading explanation for the GOP’s midterm losses. It conveniently deflects attention from the broader rejection of the administration’s record, particularly on the issues that directly affect voters’ daily lives. The cost-of-living crisis, persistent inflation and a range of domestic policy failures were every bit as consequential as foreign policy. Treating it as the sole culprit allows the administration to evade a much harder reckoning with its own shortcomings.
