The Facts

Extreme summer heat and drought destroyed roughly 3.1 million tons of potatoes in Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands, worth between 400 million and 620 million euros ($459-688 million), according to an Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit analysis published Thursday.

Output in Europe's four main growing countries is forecast to fall from a record 27.3 million tons in 2025 to between 19.5 million and 20.5 million this year. A further 3.6 million tons were not planted after last year's glut.

Yields dropped 21% below the five-year average in Belgium, 13% in France, 10% in Germany and 7% in the Netherlands, ECIU said. British growers face losses of between 80 million and 169 million pounds, with yields estimated 11% below average.
