If weights become a language capable of being read and rewritten, then we find ourselves ever closer to recursive self-improvement. Once a frontier system can reach into another AI system's guts and fix what's broken, development stops waiting on slow, expensive retraining runs. Once applicable at scale, the sky is the limit for the capabilities of AI.
Applying textbook interpretability tricks faster than a grad student is, whilst impressive engineering, not a training revolution. Every act of system improvement came straight out of pre-existing research already baked into pretraining which are mostly only effective on tidy, simple cases rather than messy real systems. An interesting paper, but not the beginning of a new technological era.
