Sending a drone toward Mecca crosses a line no armed group should ever approach, and Saudi air defenses were right to intercept it. Putting Islam’s holiest city and millions of pilgrims at risk is terrorism, not legitimate warfare. Egypt, Pakistan, the 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the international community should stand firmly against such threats and ensure the Iran-backed Houthis face a strong deterrent response to prevent further escalation.
The Mecca story is a convenient propaganda line designed to rally Muslim sympathy and shield Saudi Arabia from scrutiny while its warplanes pound Yemeni schools, bridges and roads. Yemeni strikes have targeted oil terminals and military bases, not holy sites, with no credible evidence supporting claims otherwise. A Western-armed monarchy flying hundreds of airstrikes in a week and killing children has little standing to lecture Yemenis about sanctity or restraint.
