Version 7.18.3
Whatever "associate membership" is eventually called, it is clear the EU-Canada relationship needs real institutional muscle such as observer seats, a parliamentary assembly and dynamic regulatory alignment instead of another round of warm declarations. The political intent has been declared for the world to see — only time will tell if this rhetoric is matched with action.
Von der Leyen and Carney's "associate membership" fantasy has no treaty basis, no defined rights and no obligations, leaving nothing more than an empty slogan. Tariffs are already handled by a trade pact that still isn't fully ratified, while the belief that either Canada or the EU can supplement the economic and political influence of the U.S. is for the birds. A proposal that divides opinion on name alone was never to be taken seriously.
