Palestinians Vote in First Gaza Election in 20 Years

Is Hamas a terror group on the brink of collapse or is Palestinian democracy itself the real casualty of a rigged political system?

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Hamas is holding internal leadership elections for the first time since Yahya Sinwar's death, but the vote is happening amid the group's deepest organizational and financial crisis since 1987. Support for Hamas in Gaza has cratered — down to 31% from 70% at the height of the war — with Gazans now preferring a technocratic government over continued Hamas rule. This is a terror group on the ropes, not a legitimate political force.

Establishment-critical narrative

Palestinian municipal elections are being gutted by a rigged elections law that forces candidates to endorse the Oslo Accords agreements and fields only Fatah-aligned lists, effectively eliminating real political competition. Major cities like Nablus and Ramallah won't even hold votes because only one list is registered, and Gaza is almost entirely excluded. These elections aren't democracy — they're a performance designed to appease Western donors while Palestinians remain under occupation.
