Musk's companies have a documented history of breaking contracts, and he even admitted under oath that xAI violated OpenAI's terms of service. Handing advanced AI capabilities to an operator with that track record would be reckless. Giving developers until Nov. 12 to transition is a responsible move that puts safety and accountability ahead of convenience.

This overreach punishes developers for a corporate dispute they had no part in. Cursor built its platform in good faith as neutral infrastructure, and that loyalty deserves better. Nonetheless, OpenAI systems make up just 5% of Cursor traffic, and Anthropic is already stepping up to fill the gap with Claude — so the move looks more like a political statement than a principled safety call.

AI system contracts are becoming acquisition kill switches, and OpenAI is now playing Anthropic's old game. In June 2025, Anthropic cut Windsurf's Claude access as OpenAI's $3 billion acquisition collapsed, leaving the company carved up. Now OpenAI has triggered Cursor's change-of-control clause after SpaceX's acquisition. But Cursor is harder to kill: it has trained proprietary systems, generates substantial revenue and lets developers bring their own APIs.
