Banning AI from NYC schools while half of students in grades 3–8 can't read at grade level is a massive misdirection. These kids are about to enter a workforce reshaped by the very technology being kept out of their classrooms. The problem isn't AI — the school system has been failing these children long before ChatGPT existed.
NYC's AI guardrails put critical thinking and teachers back at the center of education, where they belong. Letting kids lean on AI before they can think, write or solve problems independently doesn't prepare them for the future — it just makes them dependent faster. Age-appropriate AI literacy, not unrestricted access, is the smarter path forward.
