Version 7.7.2
Germany's push into Africa is a strategic effort to secure raw materials, markets and supply chains while strengthening partnerships in an unstable world. Nigeria is central to that strategy: bilateral trade grew 10 percent in 2025, Berlin backs ECOWAS, and both sides are expanding energy cooperation, critical minerals and digital innovation. Combined with German manufacturing investment and AfCFTA, the partnership could deliver lasting economic gains for both sides.
Germany's Nigeria strategy is driven primarily by Europe's need for energy, critical minerals and resilient supply chains — not altruism or diplomacy. Unless Berlin backs local manufacturing, technology transfer and value addition, the partnership risks reinforcing the familiar pattern of Africa exporting raw materials while higher-value industries and jobs remain in Europe. True partnership means building African industrial capacity, not just securing new suppliers.
