Expanding joint maritime operations, training exercises and personnel exchanges builds real security capacity across the region. With China deepening its policing and infrastructure footprint across Pacific island nations, locking in these partnerships is a smart, necessary move.
Establishment-critical narrative
Framing this deal as a counter to China distorts what Pacific island nations actually want. PNG pursues a foreign policy of friends to all, and Pacific nations are actively diversifying partnerships with China and Global South countries on their own terms. Western media hyping this pact as an anti-China move interferes with Pacific sovereignty rather than respecting it.
