Nepal Seeks $20M Flood Aid From 'Polluting Economies'

The Facts

The Telegraph reported Tuesday that Nepal has requested $20 million from the U.N. Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage, created in 2022 under the Paris Agreement. According to Nepal's Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal, the sum was "obviously not nearly enough" against damage estimated at more than $5 billion.

The Finance Ministry reportedly sent a letter, signed by Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle and Minister Gita Chaudhary, to the fund's board on Sept. 1, six days after the Aug. 26 flood, requesting an out-of-cycle decision.

The world's giant emitters melted these glaciers, and the U.N. has already confirmed that breaching climate obligations carries a duty to fully repair the harm, which is why these countries must accept and pay for climate change's impact on vulnerable people. This is justice owed under the polluter pays principle, not charity handed down to a small mountain nation.
