A conference that has governed for years without a clear plan can't win voters back by denouncing the other party. Elections are won on offense, by arguing for safer neighborhoods, more money in pockets and durable freedoms. A plain-spoken leader who knows the oversight fights and speaks for the whole conference can steady a minority facing an energized majority and its investigations.
A minority has power only if it holds together, and that takes a negotiator with a record of passing tax, farm and housing bills, plus the money to retake districts in 2028. Discipline with accountability, procedural pressure on a divided majority, field task forces and a united defense against investigations are an effective opposition’s tools. A fundraiser and legislator can supply them.
Johnson leaves after a speakership spent shielding the administration from awkward votes while a war, high gas prices and cuts to services turned voters against his party. Republicans now choose between leaders who stood with Trump through all of it, so the contest offers no reckoning. Democrats arrive with the gavel to check an administration that went two years without oversight.
