Facing the consequences of a spike in fuel prices in one brutal year doesn't mean bankruptcy. JetBlue's premium push and rising unit revenue show that turnaround is already working, and there's enough cash on hand to ride out an ugly stretch. Panicking bondholders shouldn't get to write the ending for an airline that still has time, assets and a credible path back to profit.
Blaming jet fuel prices is a cop-out when rivals paid the same price in the same markets and still turned a profit. Years of mistakes on hubs, premium cabins and failed deals have been financed with borrowed money, and now the cost of interest is swallowing whatever the airline earns. Debt restructuring in court is the only realistic path forward for this company.
