The Dublin agreement deserves no respect when German-funded NGO ships keep ferrying migrants straight to Italian shores. Germany wants to send people back while enabling the very organizations bringing them over in the first place. Italy has already slashed arrivals, doubled repatriations and struck deals with Libya and Tunisia that stopped over 275,000 crossings. It is time for Berlin to pay for their complicity.
Italy has taken back only 15 migrants despite Germany requesting nearly 35,000 transfers, marking a total breakdown of Rome's legal obligation. The new EU asylum pact that Meloni publicly championed reaffirms first-arrival responsibility, so refusing returns torpedoes the very system she endorsed. Blocking Dublin transfers while claiming EU solidarity rings completely hollow and undermines the unity needed for the bloc to combat illegal migration.
While Germany and Italy bicker, aslyum seekers continue to face treacherous journeys entirely preventable through humane policies. The EU, once a beacon for compassionate liberal democracy, has now been reduced to senseless cruelty for the sake of internal politics.
