Anthropic to Watermark Claude AI Content for EU Rules

Is Anthropic's AI watermarking a landmark step for transparency or just regulatory box-checking dressed up as innovation?

The Spin

Narrative A

This is amazing news for accountability, particularly coming from one of the world's most prominent AI systems. Court filings, legal documents and AI-generated slop will all be far easier to flag, bringing real transparency to a space that desperately needs it. This is the kind of structural change that makes AI safer and more trustworthy for everyone.

Narrative B

This is legal theater, as a positive detection doesn't prove Claude wrote anything, and the absence of a mark doesn't prove it didn't. The watermark can also be stripped through paraphrasing or editing, and Anthropic hasn't even published how it works, which looks more like the company is trying to quell EU pressure than actually identifying AI slop.
