The Spin

Pro-government narrative

Federal facilities and personnel in Chicago have been under siege from violent elements of the radical left, which have obstructed legitimate law enforcement activities. Given that these attacks are only escalating in their intensity, the administration has no choice but to deploy the National Guard to ensure the safety of its officers and property.

Government-critical narrative

Trump’s threatened deployment of the National Guard to Chicago has nothing to do with law and order and everything to do with the president’s belligerent political motivations. Despite what Trump may think, the White House does not have unchecked power to turn the U.S. military loose against its own law-abiding citizens.
