The Facts

  • Founding & Constitution: Australia was formed in 1901 through the merging of six British colonies. A representative democracy, Australia is also a constitutional monarchy under British rule, with the UK monarch appointing a Governor-General to act on their behalf. The world's largest island and smallest continent, it is a federation of six states — New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, and Tasmania — as well as two mainland self-governing areas of the Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory.
  • Geography: Australia is the world’s sixth-largest country, spanning 7,688,287 square kilometers, with Western Australia and Queensland making up 32.9% and 22.5% of its area, respectively. About a third of its 7.7-million-square-kilometer landmass is the Simpson Desert. Most cities and farmlands are located in the southwest and southeast, which have milder climates. The Great Dividing Range (stretching 2,300 miles) and the Macdonnell Ranges are its key mountain systems, while its major rivers include the Murray-Darling, Murrumbidgee, and Lachlan.
  • Population: Australia's Estimated Resident Population stood at 27,204,809 as of June 30, 2024, with an annual growth of 552,000 people or 2.1%. Net overseas migration was the major contributor to growth in all states and territories, save Australia's Northern Territory, where interstate migration was the main cause. Western Australia had the fastest population growth rate (2.8%) among its six states and two territories and Tasmania the slowest (0.3%). By 2071, Australia's population is projected to reach up to 45.9 million.

The Spin

Australian Labor Party narrative

Labor must win the 2025 Australian election to maintain stability, progress, and leadership that people trust. With Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s rising approval rates and Labor’s Medicare commitments, voters are shifting back. Meanwhile, the opposition's policies alienate key demographics. Labor’s lead in polls signals momentum for a return to power.

Liberal/National Coalition narrative

The Coalition must win the 2025 election to restore economic confidence and address rising cost-of-living pressures. With strong polling momentum and a proven record in economic management, the Coalition is best positioned to lead. Australians need stability, lower inflation, and a government that prioritizes working families over political self-interest.
