The Spin

Pro-government narrative

This new climate target strikes a balance between Australia’s maximum achievable goals and the need for economic growth and job creation. As the CCA’s analysis has shown, any target above 70% emissions reduction is simply unfeasible with current technology and practices. The government, therefore, strives to tackle climate change where it can while building a prosperous economy in the process.

Australian Green Party narrative

Labor’s weak climate target abandons science and sells out future generations to appease fossil fuel interests. While climate experts demanded at least a 75% reduction to align Australia with global 1.5°C warming targets, Labor has chosen the bare minimum to protect their coal and gas donors. The Australian Greens will continue to hold the government accountable and advocate for effective climate policies.

Liberal/National Coalition narrative

Labor’s latest announcement shows that the government is living in fantasy land concerning its climate targets. The new policies fail when examined for their cost and credibility, and would be impossible to achieve by 2035. The Coalition will fight to protect hard-working Australian families and businesses, who are already suffering from Labor’s dysfunctional energy policy, from this policy madness.
