Police detained more than 2,000 people across France on Saturday as protests over the high cost of living and poor school conditions spread nationwide, including dozens in Paris. Authorities put turnout at about 550,000, while organizers claimed around 800,000. Daytime marches were largely peaceful, but riots broke out in several cities in the evening.
