Trump to Direct Pentagon to Use 'Department of War' as Secondary Title

The Facts

  • U.S. President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order on Friday permitting the Department of Defense to use "Department of War" as a secondary title and allowing the Secretary of Defense to be called the "Secretary of War."

  • The executive order authorizes the defense secretary, his department and his subordinate officials to use the new titles as alternate names in official correspondence, public statements, ceremonial settings and other non-statutory documents.

  • A formal renaming of the defense department would require congressional approval, as the responsibility of creating executive departments rests with the U.S. Congress according to federal law. The order, however, directs Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to explore ways to seek a permanent change.

The Spin

Republican narrative

The Department of War name restoration reasserts America’s military heritage and reestablishes a warrior ethos. For 158 years, from Washington through World War II, major conflicts were won under the War Department banner, not the abstract “Defense” title that enabled endless foreign intervention. The change is designed to both project external strength and stir internal introspection, forcing policymakers and citizens to confront that military action is serious business — not nation-building or defensive gestures.

Democratic narrative

This name change reflects reckless warmongering from someone who avoided military service and misunderstands modern defense. Americans want to prevent wars, not glorify them, and the Pentagon’s mission extends far beyond combat to include cybersecurity, humanitarian aid and alliance building. Money spent on signs, letterhead and bureaucracy would be better invested in training and equipment for actual warfighters. The timing is also troubling, signaling aggression to allies and adversaries alike, potentially undermining future diplomatic efforts.

Mali Files ICJ Case Against Algeria Over Drone Downing

The Facts

  • Mali filed a case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Thursday, accusing Algeria of shooting down a Malian military reconnaissance drone during the night of March 31 to April 1 near Tinzaouaten in Mali's northern Kidal region.

  • The Malian Ministry of Territorial Administration described the destruction of the drone as "blatant aggression," claiming that the drone had violated the principle of non-use of force and that Algeria had refused to provide evidence that the drone had entered Algerian airspace.

  • Algeria rejected Bamako's accusations, which also include "proximity to terrorist groups" on Malian soil, citing defense ministry radar data to argue that the reconnaissance drone from military-led Mali had violated Algerian airspace near the border town of Tin Zaouatine.

The Spin

Narrative A

Algeria acted within its sovereign rights to defend its airspace against a clear violation by the Malian regime's military drone. The radar data conclusively shows this was the third such incursion by Malian aircraft since August 2024, demonstrating a pattern of disregard for international borders. Mali's accusations are nothing more than a desperate attempt to deflect from its own failures in combating terrorism and maintaining regional stability.

Narrative B

Mali's drone was conducting legitimate counterterrorism operations within its own territory when Algeria deliberately downed it to protect armed groups operating in the border region. This unprovoked aggression represents Algeria's continued interference in Mali's internal affairs and its proximity to terrorists that threaten regional security. The destruction of the drone was clearly intended to hinder Mali's efforts to neutralize armed terrorist groups.

Nerd narrative

There's a 62% chance that Mali will experience a successful coup d'état before 2040, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Gaza Boy Said to be 'Gunned Down' Allegedly Found Alive

The Facts

  • Following a report in the Daily Wire, the U.S. and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) claimed on Thursday that a Palestinian boy who former GHF contractor Tony Aguilar said had likely been killed by Israeli forces was found alive.

  • Aguilar claimed that Israeli soldiers shot at and presumably killed a boy he identified as "Amir" on May 28 at a GHF distribution site. Videos obtained by the Daily Wire and the GHF allegedly show that the boy — whose name is Abdul Rahim Muhammad Hamden — is still alive.

  • Aguilar's claims regarding his time working for the GHF were widely publicized. The GHF, in response, said that Aguilar was a "disgruntled" former contractor who had been fired.

The Spin

Pro-Israel narrative

Yet again, the media has been caught lying to tarnish Israel's image. As has been the norm for decades when it comes to covering Israel, the Western media has made a concerted effort to demonize the Jewish state by relying on faulty claims and pro-terror propaganda. Israel has done everything it can to minimize Palestinian suffering, and media outlets should take responsibility for amplifying the claims of a disgruntled former contractor.

Pro-Palestine narrative

It is beyond a reasonable doubt that Israeli forces have committed genocidal attacks on Palestinian civilians and then lied about it repeatedly. Palestinian sources never reported that this boy was killed, and there is a mountain of evidence that Israeli forces have purposefully murdered scores of Palestinian aid seekers. Furthermore, Aguiler never confirmed that the boy had been shot, and it is possible that he was simply mistaken.

Narrative C

Though the situation is still unclear, it seems relatively certain that Israeli forces have opened fire on Palestinians seeking aid. These incidents further demonstrate that the GHF's operations have been a failure and the U.N. should handle aid distribution. Both sides need to make concessions so that the ceasefire can be fully implemented and the hostages are returned.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that Israel will recognize Palestine by 2083, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Anutin Charnvirakul Elected Thai Prime Minister

The Facts

  • Thailand's parliament elected Anutin Charnvirakul as the country's 32nd prime minister on Friday. The Bhumjaithai Party leader secured 311 votes, compared to 152 for the Pheu Thai candidate, Chaikasem Nitisiri. There were 27 abstentions among the 492 active House members.

  • Anutin's victory came after the Constitutional Court dismissed Paetongtarn Shinawatra on Aug. 29 for ethics violations related to a leaked phone conversation with Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen during a border dispute.

  • The People's Party, Thailand's largest parliamentary party, backed Anutin's candidacy in exchange for promises to call a general election within four months and hold a referendum on constitutional amendments.

The Spin

Narrative A

The leaked phone call scandal with Cambodia's Hun Sen exposed Paetongtarn's poor judgment and raised serious questions about her loyalty to Thailand's national interests. Anutin's election marks a necessary break from the chaos and incompetence that have plagued the Shinawatra administration, offering a path toward political renewal and stability in tumultuous times.

Narrative B

Despite winning the vote, Anutin enters office amid widespread concern. He leads a fragile minority government with backing from the People’s Party, yet without being part of it. His track record — marked by deal-making and royalist conservative ties — raises questions about genuine reform, while economic challenges and the cyclical ousting of leaders suggest continued instability ahead.

Narrative C

This parliamentary vote is another judicial coup against democratically elected leaders, continuing the establishment's systematic dismantling of popular governments. The Shinawatra family has repeatedly won elections through genuine popular support, yet faces constant persecution from conservative courts and military-backed institutions that refuse to accept the will of Thai voters.

Study: Air Pollution Linked to Lewy Body Dementia Risk

The Facts

  • Johns Hopkins University researchers analyzed hospital records of 56.5 million U.S. Medicare patients admitted between 2000 and 2014, finding that long-term exposure to PM2.5 air pollution raised the risk of Lewy body dementia by 12% for dementia with Lewy bodies and 17% for Parkinson's disease dementia. The results were published Thursday.

  • PM2.5 particles are airborne pollutants smaller than 2.5 thousandths of a millimeter that can be inhaled deep into the lungs and are found in the bloodstream, brain and other organs, originating from industrial activity, vehicle exhausts, wildfires and wood burning in homes.

  • Laboratory experiments showed that mice exposed to PM2.5 pollution every other day for 10 months developed brain atrophy, nerve cell death and cognitive decline, while genetically modified mice lacking alpha-synuclein protein remained largely unaffected by the same exposure.

The Spin

Climate-concerned narrative

Air pollution isn't just an environmental crisis — it's a direct threat to human brains. This massive study of more than 56 million people, backed by lab experiments, shows toxic particles trigger the protein clumps that cause devastating diseases like Lewy body dementia, the second most common form of the disease after Alzheimer's. Scientists are clear this is preventable. Clean air policies are brain health policies — and bold action to cut emissions could save millions from decline and despair.

Narrative B

Dementia risk can’t be reduced to air quality alone — it's shaped by where people live, what people eat, and access to healthcare, education and social engagement. Studies show diet, exercise, cognitive stimulation and community support all play major roles in brain health, often explaining regional differences as much as pollution does. Narrowly focusing on emissions ignores the complex mix of lifestyle and environmental factors that drive cognitive decline.

Establishment-critical narrative

"Clean air policies are brain health policies" sounds good, but in practice, costly green mandates are more likely to worsen brain health by driving up energy prices, deepening poverty and stripping families of nutrition and care. It's more probable that poverty, not pollution, drives dementia risk. The surest way to protect brains isn’t by choking off affordable energy — it’s by fueling economic growth that lifts people out of deprivation and builds healthier, longer lives.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that there will be at least 112 million DALYs caused by outdoor air pollution in 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

ICE Raids Georgia Hyundai Plant, Arrests 475 Workers

The Facts

  • Federal U.S. immigration authorities arrested around 475 people on Thursday during a raid at the Hyundai electric vehicle battery plant construction site in Ellabell, Ga., about 25 miles west of Savannah.

  • The operation involved multiple agencies, including the FBI, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security, the Drug Enforcement Administration and state police, executing a search warrant as part of an "investigation into unlawful employment practices."

  • Among those detained were South Korean employees of LG Energy Solution, who were on business travel, prompting South Korea's foreign ministry to express concern for the "rights and interests of our citizens."

The Spin

Right narrative

After years of Biden's open borders allowing millions of illegals to flood in and undercut American workers with sub-minimum wages and no benefits, arrests like those at the Hyundai plant in Georgia are essential. These raids enforce laws, boost citizen wages and deter lawbreakers who burden taxpayers and depress jobs for the underprivileged. Uniform enforcement protects the workforce, as even Bernie Sanders once argued against cheap labor imports.

Left narrative

This raid has unnecessarily disrupted a multi-billion-dollar boost for Georgia. Skilled migrant workers, vital to Hyundai's electric vehicle battery project, aren't criminals but key economic contributors. Harsh ICE raids harm businesses, separate families and stifle innovation, as evinced by detained parents in New York. Immigration enforcement shouldn't cripple legitimate industries or punish hardworking migrants driving U.S. progress.

Nerd narrative

There is a 15% chance that at least twice as many deportations by U.S. ICE occur in Fiscal Year 2025 compared with Fiscal Year 2024, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

UK: Lammy New Deputy PM in Cabinet Reshuffle After Rayner Resignation

The Facts

  • David Lammy has been appointed as the U.K.'s new deputy prime minister on Friday following the resignation of Angela Rayner earlier in the day. The move comes amid a wider Cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

  • Alongside his appointment as deputy prime minister, Lammy has been moved from foreign secretary to justice secretary, with former Home Secretary Yvette Cooper taking up Lammy's previous role and former Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood becoming home secretary. Rachel Reeves remains as chancellor.

  • Liz Kendall has become the new science secretary and has been replaced as work and pensions secretary by former Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Pat McFadden, who will also incorporate the skills brief from the Department for Education.

The Spin

Pro-government narrative

Though forced out of necessity following Rayner's resignation, Starmer's Cabinet reshuffle is an opportunity for the Prime Minister to start anew. After a tricky first year and a tough budget ahead, Starmer has made decisive changes to his team in order to make a real difference to working people. As today shows, now is not the time for complacency.

Opposition narrative

Starmer's desperate reshuffle fools no one. Shuffling ministers around can't hide his government's chaos. This self-declared "Phase Two" is panic management after Rayner's forced resignation. The same failed faces in new roles won't change a thing as problems only worsen. Despite the spectacle, Britain remains doomed under Starmer's leadership.

Nerd narrative

There is a 43% chance that the U.K. will have a Labour prime minister on Jan. 1, 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

DOJ Opens Criminal Investigation Into Fed Governor Cook

The Facts

  • The U.S. Justice Department (DOJ) has reportedly opened a criminal investigation into Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, issuing subpoenas as part of an inquiry into whether she submitted fraudulent information on mortgage applications related to properties in Ann Arbor, Mich., and Atlanta.

  • The investigation follows two criminal referrals from Bill Pulte, the Trump-appointed director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency. He accused Cook of misleading banks on multiple mortgage applications to receive favorable lending terms, by listing two homes as her primary residence in 2021.

  • Pulte's criminal referrals have been used by President Donald Trump since last month in his attempt to fire Cook. The Federal Reserve Act grants the president the power to fire a Fed governor "for cause."

The Spin

Democratic narrative

This investigation is yet another attempt by Trump to strong-arm federal officials into stepping down, allowing him to reshape government agencies according to his personal agenda. If the DOJ is truly interested in uncovering so-called mortgage fraud, it should look in Trump's own cabinet, where at least three members have done the same thing that Cook stands accused of.

Republican narrative

It's time for government officials to play by the same rules as average American citizens. Cook, who received preferential treatment on interest rates because of her lies, must be held accountable both by facing a DOJ investigation and losing her position at the Fed. The Biden administration may have looked past her lies, but the Trump administration can't let her off the hook.

Nerd narrative

There's a 78% chance that U.S. federal interest rates at the end of 2025 will be lower than at the end of 2024, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

EU Fines Google $3.45B for Anti-Competitive Ad Practices

Photo: Unsplash

The Facts

  • The European Commission imposed a €2.95 billion ($3.45 billion) fine on Google on Friday for abusing its dominant position in the online advertising technology market by favoring its own services over those of competitors since 2014.

  • Google controls multiple layers of the digital advertising ecosystem, including publisher ad servers, ad-buying tools, and ad exchanges, creating what regulators have called inherent conflicts of interest.

  • The Commission found Google gave its AdX ad exchange unfair advantages by informing it in advance of competitor bids and directing its ad buying tools to primarily place bids on AdX rather than competing exchanges.

The Spin

Narrative A

This massive fine is necessary enforcement against a tech monopolist that has systematically rigged the digital advertising market in its favor. Google's control over every step of the ad supply chain creates obvious conflicts of interest that harm competition and innovation. The company has been gaming auctions by giving its own ad exchange insider information while steering business away from competitors.

Narrative B

The EU's decision overlooks the competitive reality of today's digital advertising landscape, where numerous alternatives exist, and Google's services benefit thousands of European businesses. This unjustified penalty will ultimately harm the very publishers and advertisers the Commission claims to protect by forcing changes that significantly reduce their ability to monetize effectively and sustainably.

Nerd narrative

There's a 40% chance that Google will implement a feature to explain targeted Google Ads before 2026, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Report: Navy SEALs Allegedly Killed North Korean Civilians in Failed 2019 Mission

The Facts

  • According to a New York Times report, U.S. Navy SEAL Team 6's Red Squadron conducted a covert mission in early 2019 to plant an electronic surveillance device on North Korean shores to intercept Kim Jong Un's communications during high-level nuclear negotiations.

  • The mission required President Trump's direct approval and involved SEALs using mini-submarines to reach North Korean waters before swimming to shore to install the listening device near Kim Jong Un's location.

  • During the operation, SEALs allegedly encountered a small North Korean fishing boat and opened fire, killing two or three civilians who were diving for shellfish, mistaking them for potential security forces.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

This SEAL raid exemplifies the tough choices presidents face against authoritarian dictators like Kim Jong Un approving high-risk ops for critical intel amid nuclear talks and potentially averting catastrophe. Yet, it reveals dangers — mission failure, civilian deaths, aborted goals, escalation risks and secrecy evading Congress — highlighting how minor errors can spark disaster and erode accountability.

Establishment-critical narrative

Presidents from both parties, from Bush to Trump, routinely meddle abroad, deploying troops whimsically without accountability. While Bush killed the Agreed Framework, enabling North Korea's nukes, Trump later approved risky SEAL ops amid talks, echoing hardliner failures. Bipartisan recklessness ignores non-interventionist roots — fueling endless conflicts and eroding liberty.

Nerd narrative

There is a 20% chance that the World Population Review will report North and South Korea to be at war before 2050, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
