US Defense Chief Speaks For First Time With Chinese Counterpart

US Defense Sec. Lloyd Austin and his Chinese counterpart, Wei Fenghe, talked for the first time on Wed., discussing defense relations, regional security, and Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Specifically, the Pentagon chief raised concerns over Chinese military actions in Taiwan, the South China Sea and the East China Sea.
Wei, in turn, warned that the Taiwan issue would damage their relations if not handled properly, stressing that the island is an inalienable part of China.
Pro-China narrative
Good relations with the US are important for China; it isn't seeking hegemony, and doesn't want a new Cold War. Nevertheless, the US shouldn't underestimate China's determination and capability when it comes to its core interests, and mustn't attempt to challenge red lines.
Anti-China narrative
China has a proven desire to reshape the international order and expand its clout in the Pacific region. Further, if its military provocations against Taiwan, human rights abuses in Xinjiang, and efforts to crush Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement weren't enough, the prospect of an alliance with Moscow gives very good reason for the West to be concerned.
Florida Advises Against Gender Reassignment for Youth

On Wed., the Florida Dept. of Health released a statement recommending doctors not to assist children and teens with gender transitions.
The department also advises against social transition, including the use of a different name or pronoun.
This follows the Biden administration's recent announcement of a series of new measures to support transgender youth, such as endorsing gender reassignment surgery and hormone treatments.
Left narrative
Florida's DOH is pushing propaganda that attacks transgender youth, under the guise of "guidelines." Dr. Ladapo has previously been discredited by his supervisor for alleged false claims surrounding his background and his advice shouldn't be trusted.
Right narrative
Florida is appropriately responding to the Biden administration's extreme commitment to a radical LGBTQ+ agenda. Choosing politics rather than science is a dangerous move for American children and families.
Clashes Flare for Second Day in a Row at Al-Aqsa Mosque

Palestinians and Israeli police clashed for a second day in a row on Fri. at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. Palestinians threw stones while the police entered the compound firing rubber bullets and stun grenades. The confrontation left at least 30 Palestinians and one Israeli police officer injured.
Clashes also occurred on Thurs. around the entrance to the mosque. Several Palestinians were wounded after Israeli police used pepper spray, tear gas, and rubber bullets, while Palestinian youth shot fireworks at Israeli groups that passed through the compound.
This comes as Jewish groups were suspended from visiting the Temple Mount starting Fri. until Ramadan ends on May 2, as part of a years-long policy of barring non-Muslims from the site during the final 10 days of the Muslim holy month.
Pro-Palestine narrative
This is but the latest in a series of unprovoked attacks by Israeli occupation forces, who appear bent on turning the holy month of Ramadan in Jerusalem and Gaza into a battlefield.
Pro-Israel narrative
Police officers were forced to act in response to Palestinian violence to block rioters from injuring worshippers and desecrating holy places. This is a complex and sensitive time, but Israel is determined to guarantee the security of its citizens and public order, while taking efforts to allow freedom of worship to everyone on the Temple Mount.
Nerd narrative
The Metaculus Community predicts a 10% chance that Israel and Palestine will hold peace talks in 2022.
CNN+ Streaming Service to Shut Down after One Month

Warner Bros. Discovery is shutting down CNN+, the network's streaming platform, only a month after its initial launch, according to a memo sent by CNN's incoming CEO Chris Licht.
The service was formulated by former CNN president Jeff Zucker and former WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar, neither of whom are now with the company.
WarnerMedia, CNN's former parent company, was acquired by Discovery on April 8, who had different attitudes towards streaming networks.
Right narrative
The failure of this flashy new service is just another stage in CNN's downfall. The network has been drifting away from actual news coverage and transformed into an uncritical mouthpiece for the left. Informed news consumers have taken notice and are rightly abandoning the platform.
Left narrative
Though conservative media may paint this decision as a sign of failure, it is simply the result of a change in leadership and strategy. Licht clearly stated that the decision was not based on performance, but on the direction that Warner Bros. Discovery wants to follow.
Cynical narrative
This is yet another sign that the already saturated market of streaming services has further to fall. Streaming pioneer Netflix was first to the slump in subscription rates as the appetite for overpriced content falters, and now others will join it.
Day 58 Roundup: Satellite Imagery Appears to Show Mass Graves Near Mariupol, Fighting Continues in East

A satellite image released by Maxar Technologies appears to show mass graves west of Mariupol. Maxar said the image was from Apr. 3 and showed approx. 200 mass graves stretching away from an existing cemetery in the town of Manush, roughly 12 mi (20 km) from Mariupol.
In a statement on Thurs., the city's mayor Vadym Boychenko accused Russia of "hiding their military crimes" by taking the bodies of civilians from Mariupol and burying them in Manhush. The graves could hold as many as 9k dead, the city's council said.
It comes as Putin on Thurs. ordered Russian troops not to storm Ukrainian forces encircled in the Azovstal steelworks plant within the city – instead opting for a blockade. Putin claimed control of Mariupol, though an unnamed US Dept. of Defense official said that the Pentagon hasn't assessed that it has fallen.
Pro-establishment narrative
This isn't the first time mass graves have appeared in Ukraine. Satellite images showing others in Bucha emerged earlier in Apr. and Russia has bombarded Mariupol for months. These images are evidence of Russian war crimes, as stated by Ukrainian officials. They must be held to account.
Establishment-critical narrative
Maxar Technologies, according to its own website, provides 90% of "foundational geospatial intelligence used by the US government for national security." Satellite imagery doesn't always show the true picture of what took place on the ground and media companies ought to ask themselves whether they're unwittingly circulating images paid for by the US military.
Nerd narrative
There is a 94% chance that Mariupol will be under Russian control by Jun. 1, 2022, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Boris Johnson Set to Face Commons Inquiry

The committee of privileges will investigate whether UK PM Boris Johnson knowingly misled parliament over lockdown parties in Downing Street, it was confirmed on Thursday.
Although the motion was initiated by the opposition Labour Party, it passed after the government ditched efforts to convince Conservative MPs to block it.
The probe will put even more pressure on Johnson, who was issued a fine last week for attending a gathering during lockdown that violated COVID restriction laws.
Right narrative
Johnson needs to resolve this row if Conservatives are to have any chance at recovering their reputation before the upcoming local elections. Party unity is crucial, and the PM is realizing how much he needs the support of his MP allies.
Left narrative
Johnson's position hangs by a thread. The Tories are in despair over the PM's leadership, as indignation grows over the incompetence and dispassion he flaunted during this crisis. He can no longer rely on the support of his own party.
Narrative C
Now is not the right or responsible time for Johnson to go. The UK and the rest of Europe face an international crisis over Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Though a change of leader would be appropriate under normal circumstances, the UK can't risk appointing a lame-duck PM at such a grave moment.
Nerd narrative
According to the Metaculus prediction community, there's a 50% chance that Boris Johnson will step down as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom by May, 2023.
Blasts in Afghan Cities Kill and Injure Dozens

An explosion claimed by Islamic State targeted a Shi'ite mosque in the northern Afghan city of Mazar-e-Sharif on Thurs., killing at least 16 people and injuring 58. Another blast in Kunduz caused at least 20 more casualties, and another in Kabul wounded 3, including a child.
An Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman said the roadside blast in Kunduz targeted a van of military mechanics, and school students were among the wounded.
IS claimed the attack in Mazar-e-Sharif was part of an ongoing global campaign to "avenge" the deaths of its former leader and spokesman.
Republican narrative
The current security situation in Afghanistan is a direct result of the Biden administration's decision to withdraw from the country. Ethnic and religious minorities are now being slaughtered by extremists because Biden thought it would be politically expedient to abandon longstanding allies.
Democratic narrative
The US's disastrous invasion and occupation of the country, not Biden's withdrawal, are to blame for the current security crisis. The fact that Afghan security forces collapsed following the US withdrawal indicates that the security situation was simply unsustainable, making attacks like this one, unfortunately, inevitable.
Report: GOP Leaders Broke with Trump after Jan. 6

New reporting from the NY Times claims that top Republican lawmakers in both houses of Congress sharply broke with former President Trump in the days after the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
The reporting, based on a forthcoming book by Times correspondents, alleges that GOP leaders in both houses of Congress thought Trump was responsible for the riots and should be removed from office.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) reportedly discussed invoking the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office, but ultimately told members of the GOP caucus that he planned to tell the President to resign.
Republican narrative
The mainstream, woke media is coordinating with the radical left Democrats to impugn the reputation of Republican leaders. This reporting is based on nothing more than rumor and innuendo.
Democratic narrative
McCarthy's denial is just more lies, and the craven nature of Republican leadership is now on display for all of history to witness. The GOP's cowardly willingness to keep moving red lines to accommodate the disgraced Trump's egregious conduct explains the fall of a once-great political party.
Kids Hepatitis Outbreak: 25 New UK Cases; ~650 Total Infections Worldwide
The mysterious children's hepatitis outbreak continues to spread worldwide, with another 25 cases identified in the UK, bringing that country's total to 222.
On Fri., the WHO reported 650 probable global cases across 33 countries, with 99 additional cases pending classification. There have been at least nine fatalities associated with the outbreak.
Hepatitis is usually caused by a virus. Some doctors suspect this unusual outbreak may be caused by the adenovirus - a common type of pathogen spread from person-to-person that rarely causes hepatitis in healthy kids.
Right narrative
We can thank COVID lockdowns for possibly playing a role in this new public health crisis. The endless cycle of lockdowns may have weakened children's immunity and left them at risk of the adenovirus. Enforced social isolation has consequences.
Left narrative
There are a lot of question marks here and we can't jump to conclusions. The adenovirus hasn't been confirmed as the smoking gun and, while COVID is unlikely the sole culprit, the fact that some kids with hepatitis were also COVID positive is a dangerous development that needs further study.
Nerd narrative
There is a 54% chance that pediatric cases of hepatitis with unknown origins will be linked to an adenovirus infection by 2022, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Philadelphia Drops Mask Mandate Days After Its Reinstatement

On Fri., city health officials announced that Philadelphia has lifted its indoor mask policy following a vote from the city's Board of Health on Thu. This comes just days after the mandate was reinstated by Philadelphia's Health Dept.
After previously ending its mask mandate on Mar. 2, the Health Department announced on Apr. 11 that indoor face masks would be reinstated starting Apr. 18.
This renewed mandate met a backlash as several business owners and residents filed a lawsuit against the city.
Left narrative
Though many wish it to be, COVID is not over. Masks have become politicized and unpopular when, in reality, they are a tool to protect everyone. Too much time is wasted fighting each other rather than fighting the pandemic. We can't continue to put selfish interests before science.
Right narrative
While wearing a mask might provide the illusion of safety to some people, it doesn't actually do much other than provide a false sense of security and spread alarmism. Masks were an excellent weapon authorities could use to spread their message of constant fear, division, and dehumanization.
