Republicans Call for Investigation into 5 Fetuses Found in DC Home

Congressional Republicans are demanding an investigation into the circumstances surrounding five fetuses obtained by the pro-life activist group, Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising (PAAU). How PAAU obtained the fetuses is unclear.
Earlier this week, nearly two dozen members of Congress sent DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and the city's chief of police a letter demanding an investigation be launched into whether the fetuses had been subject to illegal abortions.
The Metropolitan Police Dept. has said it doesn't believe a crime has been committed under DC law, but PAAU and some medical professionals believe the fetuses may have been terminated in very late-term abortions,' which would've been illegal.
Right narrative
It's reprehensible that police are refusing to investigate this. This wouldn't be the first time a Washington doctor was accused of at least endorsing partial-birth abortions; the least the state can do to honor both the children and the law is to conduct immediate and thorough autopsies.
Left narrative
The fetuses have already been examined and were found to be aborted in accordance with DC law. Authorities are right to instead focus on how they came into the hands of activists charged with threatening and intimidating women seeking legal and constitutionally protected abortions.
Tx. Gov. Abbott to End Truck Inspections at Two More Border Bridges
On Thurs., Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced agreements with the governors of Chihuahua and Coahuila to end truck inspections at their respective international bridges, in exchange for more security measures on the Mexican side.
This comes one day after he reached a similar deal with Nuevo León Gov. Samuel Alejandro Garcia Sepulveda to end inspections on the Laredo–Colombia Solidarity International Bridge.
Abbott had previously ordered "enhanced safety inspections" of all vehicles passing through ports of entry, in advance of an expected surge of migrants when the Title 42 public health order ends.
Democratic narrative
Abbott is more interested in stunts that distort Biden's border policies than solving the problem. There's a bipartisan deal to be had on federal immigration reform, but Republicans see posturing and feigned outrage as their keys to victory come election time.
Republican narrative
There is a well-established history of the US and Mexico collaborating to solve crises at the border, but Biden has refused to lead, leaving Gov. Abbott to step up to do the president's job for him.
Russia Threatens Nuclear Deployment if to Sweden and Finland Join NATO

Former Russian president and current deputy chairman of the nation's Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, has threatened to bolster Russia's troop presence and send nuclear weapons to the Baltic Sea if Sweden and Finland join NATO.
Medvedev said on Telegram that "balance must be restored" before there can be any talk of any nuclear-free status for the Baltic.
Finland and Sweden aren't NATO members, but Russia's invasion of Ukraine has given rise to public support for joining the alliance.
Anti-Russia narrative
This is an empty threat, given Russia already has nuclear weapons deployed in Kaliningrad. As sovereign states, Sweden and Finland are entitled to choose their own national security strategy, and Russia's aggressiveness towards them only pushes them toward NATO.
Pro-Russia narrative
Finland invaded Russia in 1941 together with German troops. NATO's land borders with the Russian Federation will more than double if Sweden and Finland join the alliance. It goes without saying that Russia will have to strengthen its border. Moscow's concerns are legitimate as the encirclement of Russia by the powerful alliance poses a direct threat to its security.
Nerd narrative
There's an 87% chance that Finland joins NATO before 2024, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
6 Palestinians Killed In West Bank

The Palestinian Health Ministry on Thurs. stated that Israeli forces killed 6 Palestinians in confrontations this week, as an extensive Israeli military campaign across the West Bank entered into its 5th day.
On Wed. night, 3 Palestinians were killed in separate incidents as Israel Defense Forces (IDF) carried out raids in Silwad, near Ramallah, and outside Bethlehem. Among them, a 14-year-old boy and a lawyer named Mohammed Assaf.
On Thurs. morning in Jenin, 2 Palestinians were killed in further clashes. They were identified as Mustafa Abul Rob and Shaas Kamamji, both in their 20s. The latter was reportedly the brother of Ayham Kamamji, one of the 6 escapees of the Gilboa prison in September.
Pro-Israel narrative
The security situation is currently very delicate in Israel. With Ramadan ongoing, the Passover holiday is expected to be very tense. Israeli security forces must be on the lookout for more heinous terrorist activity, where attackers may seek to damage the very fabric of Israeli life.
Pro-Palestine narrative
The recent killings in the West Bank will escalate the conflict, driving the Palestinian people to seek revenge through an Intifada. Israeli raids and military operations are acts of aggression and Israel must be held accountable.
Day 51 Roundup: Cruise Missile Attack on Kyiv Outskirts; Russia Threatens Further Intensification

Blasts rocked Kyiv early on Fri. as Russia's MoD said it launched a Kalibr cruise missile attack on the 'Vizar' machine-building plant in the Zhulyany suburb. They said that the strike destroyed a workshop which produced and repaired anti-aircraft missile systems, as well as anti-ship missiles.
It comes amid the sinking of Russia's Moskva warship on Thurs., and an alleged series of attacks in the village of Klimovo in Russia's Bryansk region. Russia said it had shot down the Mi-8 helicopter responsible, though this couldn't be independently confirmed.
Russia's MoD further said it would intensify attacks on the capital in response. It stated that "strikes on targets in Kyiv will increase in response to any terrorist attacks or acts of sabotage on Russian territory committed by the Kyiv nationalist regime."
Anti-Russia narrative
This invasion is an egregious violation of international law. Putin's ultimate aim is to restore the Soviet empire, even if it takes massive bloodshed and false pretexts such as calling the 2014 Ukrainian revolution after a fraudulent election a "coup". This unprovoked attack is the latest chapter in Putin's Orwellian attempt to rewrite history.
Pro-Russia narrative
NATO and the US have ignored Russia's security concerns by breaking its promise not to expand eastward in return for German reunification. These concerns are legitimate and taking them seriously would have avoided the Ukraine tragedy.
Nerd narrative
There's a 7% chance that Russia will control Kharkiv on June 1, 2022 according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Drug Overdoses Contribute to 2021 Being Deadliest Year in US History

The CDC has updated its provisional death tally in America for 2021 to 3.465M, up 80K from 2020's record.
Provisional data through Oct. shows an increase in drug overdose deaths from 93K in 2020 to 105K in 2021. The number of teenagers dying from overdoses saw a spike of 20% after having doubled from 2019-2020. Most of these overdoses involved the synthetic opioid fentanyl.
This news comes despite teenage drug usage falling to 18.7%, down from an average of approximately 30% from 2010-2020.
Left narrative
The US is experiencing a public health crisis. More education is needed to protect people, especially the young and vulnerable communities of color, from opioids like Fentanyl.
Right narrative
Fentanyl is flooding the US through our porous southern border. Fentanyl seizures by US Customs and Border Protection have soared in recent years – security must be tightened.
Clashes Erupt at al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem

Israeli soldiers entered al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem on Fri. as thousands of Palestinians gathered for Ramadan prayers, setting off clashes that medics said wounded over 150 Palestinians.
Videos circulating online showed Palestinians throwing rocks and police firing tear gas and stun grenades. Others showed worshippers barricading themselves inside the mosque.
Israeli sources said that the soldiers entered the mosque to remove rocks and stones that had allegedly been gathered in anticipation of violence.
Pro-Palestine narrative
This attack was a blatant provocation instigated by Israeli occupation forces, who indiscriminately targeted the mosque full of innocent Palestinian worshippers. It's also noteworthy that this comes as far-right Jewish groups have called for raids of the mosque during the Passover holiday.
Pro-Israel narrative
Police officers were forced to act in response to Palestinian violence. They acted bravely, risking their own safety to block rioters from injuring worshippers. This is a complex and sensitive time, but Israel is dedicated to allowing freedom of worship to everyone on the Temple Mount.
NHS Waiting Lists in England at Record High

The number of NHS patients on waiting lists for routine hospital treatments has reached the highest level since record-keeping began 15 yrs ago.
Over 23k people on the 6.2M-long list have been waiting more than 2 yrs. That number is down by approx. 500 since Jan. but remains much higher than the roughly 2.6k people recorded in Apr. 2021.
In Mar., admissions performance fell to its worst ever level, with over 22k patients waiting 12 hrs to be treated - 3 times longer than the NHS target.
Right narrative
COVID is causing an inevitable backlog, from which NHS staff are trying to recover by prioritizing the most clinically vulnerable patients. Since Jan., the number of people waiting 2+ yrs for elective surgery has fallen by 75% and things are continuing to improve.
Left narrative
COVID has clearly damaged the NHS. But it's Boris Johnson's neglectful pandemic policies that are ruining it. With the virus unlikely to end any time soon, COVID is causing 28k NHS staff absences every day. The government is failing to acknowledge the severity of the threat COVID continues to pose to the British public and the nation's health system.
South Africa Deploys 10k Troops After Devastating Floods

South Africa has activated its National Defence Force to support disaster relief for devastating flooding in the KwaZulu-Natal province. 10k troops will support clean-up, logistics, medical operations, rescue, and reconnaissance.
As of Mon., 440 people were confirmed dead with 63 missing in the rapidly-evolving disaster. 4k homes were destroyed and another 8k were damaged.
The intense rainfall that began last week has since eased. The amount of rain which fell last Mon. was equal to about 75% of South Africa's avg. annual precipitation.
Narrative A
There's no doubt the catastrophic floods are due to climate change. This disaster is sending a message that climate change is serious and it's here, right now.
Narrative B
It's impossible to attribute individual weather events occurring over short time frames to global warming - even if more extreme events are generally increasing over time.
Narrative C
This tragedy is a teachable moment. 90% of African cities don't have a substantial climate adaptation plan. Durban did release a Climate Action Plan in 2020, but unfortunately there's no evidence it's being implemented.
Florida Gov. Signs 15-Week Abortion Ban Into Law

A bill banning abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy was signed into law by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday.
The ban will allow exemptions to save a mother's life, prevent serious injury or if the fetus has a fatal abnormality, but not in cases of rape, incest or human trafficking.
FL joins a growing number of states to restrict access to abortions in anticipation of SCOTUS overturning Roe v. Wade this summer.
Left narrative
This undermines the rights of women to decide what happens to their bodies. Not only does the threat of Roe v. Wade being overturned mean access to reproductive rights may be eroded, but advocacy groups have warned that this legislation will hit marginalized communities, including Black and Latino residents, hardest.
Right narrative
DeSantis is defending the rights of those who can't defend themselves. The legislation will give all children an opportunity and includes provisions for protecting the safety of the mother when pregnancy poses a risk to their life.
China Stages Military Exercises After US Reps Visit Taiwan

China said it has conducted military drills around Taiwan on Fri. as "a countermeasure to the recent negative actions of the US," including the visit of a delegation of Congressional reps.
The visiting US delegation declared their support for Taipei while also issuing a warning to China.
They held a meeting with the President Tsai Ing-wen, in which Taiwan was described as a "country of global significance," with security implications for the world.
Anti-China narrative
China must have no doubt that invading Taiwan will have severe consequences. The US traditional strategy of ambiguity with regard to Taipei must be reformed in light of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Washington must stand for freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law in the Pacific.
Pro-China narrative
US lawmakers are acting irresponsibly with their various official visits to Taiwan and public declarations in favor of its secession. The US should respect the agreed upon one-China policy. The PRC doesn't want a conflict but it's prepared to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Nerd narrative
The Metaculus Community predicts a 8% chance that there will be a military conflict between the PRC and Taiwan before 2023.
