UN: El Niño Could Push 49M More Into Hunger by 2027

An emerging El Niño event could push at least 49 million additional people worldwide into acute food insecurity by the end of 2027, according to data published by the U.N. World Food Programme (WFP) on Wednesday.

If realized, the figures would raise the total number of acutely food-insecure people, defined by the WFP as those in varying degrees of hunger below the level of famine — from approximately 225 million to 274 million, a 22% increase.

Central America is expected to see the largest proportional rise in food insecurity at 83%, while Southern and East Africa could see an increase of 26%. Asia, the Pacific, West and Central Africa, meanwhile, could record a combined 14.2 million additional people facing acute hunger.

The projections follow forecasts that the coming El Niño could be among the most potent in recent times, with the WFP reporting an 81% chance of a very strong El Niño that could rank among the largest since 1950, with Pacific sea surface temperatures at their warmest since at least 1982.

In response, the WFP announced that it had activated anticipatory action plans in over 50 countries, including South Sudan, Chad, Mauritania, Uganda, Guatemala and El Salvador, noting that every $1 invested can generate up to $7 in avoided losses.

WFP Director of Food Security Analysis Jean-Martin Bauer, however, noted that U.S. and European funding cuts had hampered the agency's ability to monitor the crisis, with the number of WFP household surveys falling from roughly 1.1 million in 2024 to around 800,000 in 2025.
