Version 7.7.2
These results reaffirm that Labour is united and committed to a fresh vision of decentralized power and economic reform under Andy Burnham. There is no time for internal squabbles — rewiring the economy for ordinary people and the distribution of growth beyond Westminster can no longer wait. Whilst Burnham will still need to prove himself to many in the party who, for now, have given their support, for the first time in a long while there is widespread optimism across the party.
Beyond superficial devolution proposals, Burnham's pitch to Labour MPs seems more to be fixated on appeasing the backbench mob that have consistently refused to accept the changes the country desperately needs. Yet already there is discontent, with over 80 MPs calling for immigration reforms to be scrapped. Britain is left wondering which is worse: an incoming prime minister without a real democratic mandate, or the country continuing to be held hostage by those who care more about ideology than success.
