Starmer Leadership Crisis

Should Labour stick with Starmer or replace him with either Streeting, Rayner or Burnham?

The Spin

Narrative A

A change in leadership at this time is precisely the last thing the Labour movement, and indeed the country, needs. It would be a disservice to the electorate to repeat the same damaging psychodrama that took place under the Tories. Rather, Labour should reflect on the lessons from the local elections and rally behind the prime minister in delivering the radical change and results that the British people demand.

Narrative B

There is only one man who can save Labour at this perilous moment, and that man is Wes Streeting. Armed with considerable personal charisma, courage in convictions and a respectable record in government, all of which Starmer lacks, Streeting offers Labour the political deftness and ability to guide the party out of this crisis, see off the threat posed by the Labour left and effect the change the country needs.

Narrative C

Since winning the 2024 general election, Labour has strayed from its core founding values. Abandoning the winter fuel allowance and cutting disability benefits were policies that Labour's base would never support, and which directly led to its election defeat. Moving forward, Labour must change and return to its socialist roots by tackling inequality and fighting for ordinary people, a change Angela Rayner could herald.

Narrative D

With Labour's polling numbers in freefall and the prospect of a Reform government looming ever larger, Andy Burnham is the Labour Party's best and last hope of avoiding catastrophe. Given his proven record as mayor and coherent political ideology, Burnham could bring the same radical and positive change to the country as he did in Manchester, improving both the U.K.'s fortunes and Labour's electoral prospects.
