Cutting off trade with Canada would save the U.S. $60 billion to $90 billion a year, and one signature could do it. Canada sends roughly 95% of its business south, so the leverage sits entirely on the American side of the border. The rules of world trade are changing, and no neighbor gets a free pass anymore. Will Canada ever get it?
A trade deficit is not a loss. Buying $100 of goods from Canada while selling $80 back means Americans got $100 worth of stuff, not that $20 vanished. Pretending America would "save" $90 billion by cutting off Canada is just MAGA math being used to make a trade deficit look like money lost. This is delusional narcissism.
Trump gets this one wrong. America and Canada are far more intertwined than he admits. Canadian oil fuels U.S. refineries, potash feeds American farms, and auto parts cross the border 6–8 times before the manufacturing process is complete. Canada also supplies critical minerals and lumber. Cutting off a vital partner makes no sense. America and Canada should build together.
