The idea that the Fed floats above politics is a myth nobody actually believes. Congress created the Fed, Congress sets its mandate, and the president appoints its governors. Trump voicing loud opinions on rates or utilizing leverage breaks nothing — the real failure is a Congress that refuses to define the rules. There must be a breaking point if the Fed is not going to respond to economic conditions adequately.
A president shouldn't hold global trade hostage to force a rate cut from the Fed. Central-bank independence consistently tracks with financial stability, and executive pressure campaigns like this have already caused real economic damage abroad, in Argentina and Germany alike. Erode that credibility, and borrowing costs rise for everyone — not just the White House's targets.
