Thomas Markle Arrested on Child Porn Charge in Florida
The Facts
- Thomas Wayne Markle, 82, the estranged father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, was arrested Friday at a senior living facility outside Tampa, Florida, and charged with one count of possession of child pornography, the U.S. Department of Justice said.
- The criminal complaint alleges Markle kept child sexual abuse material, including sexually explicit photographs of himself with prepubescent girls, in two Los Angeles-area storage units. A witness reportedly identified him as the man in the photos. He faces a maximum of 20 years in prison if convicted.
- Agents who searched the two units, which Markle has rented since 2008, seized approximately 78 items including slides, film negatives and books, according to the 14-page complaint. The most recent payments on both units were made last month by auto-pay.

Decades of unbroken rent payments on storage units tie that material to one renter alone, and photographs placing an adult beside nude prepubescent children are difficult to reconcile with an innocent explanation. Prosecution to the fullest extent of U.S. law is the only proportionate response.
Defense narrative
Possession requires control, and devices shipped overseas and left in storage open to anyone for nearly two years cannot be pinned on a man who never had access. A feuding relative held those boxes, and Hollywood history books rebranded as pornography point to a set-up, not a crime. Offering a polygraph, forensic access and full cooperation is not the conduct of a man with something to hide.
