The Facts

  • Philippine authorities said Sunday that police reportedly found a trove of child sexual abuse material and a laptop at Thomas Markle Sr.'s former home in Cebu. The country's anti-trafficking and child sexual exploitation task force is investigating, officials said.
  • Meghan's half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., told The Sun he found "hundreds, if not thousands" of child sex abuse images in four boxes left at their father's Cebu home, and he submitted a sworn statement to police in the Philippines.
  • Markle Jr. said he reported his discovery to the FBI hotline and the Pennsylvania State Police in July. He also apologized to Meghan for siding with their father, saying he had "been protecting the wrong person for the past nine years."

The Spin

Narrative A

Passing serious allegations to the police and then watching nothing happen for years is an inexcusable failure on the part of the Met Police. The double standard is glaring after former Prince Andrew, who was accused of the same crimes, received family protection and a life of luxury, while the woman who cut ties with her creepy father gets slammed in the media. Blame belongs with the institutions that sat on the warnings.

Narrative B

An 82-year-old man in poor health is entitled to due process, and an unconcluded investigation is not a verdict. Staying silent about allegations this grave while airing every grievance about in-laws on television invites hard questions about who was protected and who was left at risk.
