The Spin

Establishment-critical narrative

This acquisition is dubious on legal and political grounds, and the so-called free market is certainly not at play here. Evercore and Allen & Co. had undisclosed ties, hidden until a last-minute lawsuit, which, in and of itself, undercuts the process.

Pro-establishment narrative

Netflix's exit from the bidding war in the face of Paramount's more desirable bid proves the market is already self-correcting, and no government intervention is needed. A combined Paramount-Warner entity creates a real challenger to Netflix's dominance, which has raised prices 125% since 2014 while facing zero credible competition.
