Does this reveal a company mid-pivot or a structural collapse already in motion?

The Facts

  • Shein made its Hong Kong Stock Exchange debut on Tuesday, with shares falling as much as 10% in early trading before closing at HK$48.50 ($6.19) — nearly flat with its IPO price of HK$48.56. The listing raised HK$13.6 billion ($1.7 billion) and valued the company at approximately $26.3 billion.
  • The valuation represents a decline of more than 70% from its peak of nearly $100 billion in 2022. The drop reflects slower revenue growth and a $99 million first-quarter loss after the removal of de minimis duty exemptions in the U.S. and new EU import charges.
  • Shein's attempts to list in New York and London were blocked amid concerns over alleged forced labor in its supply chain and scrutiny of its business practices. The company says it maintains a "zero-tolerance policy" for forced labor. Chinese authorities ultimately approved its Hong Kong listing in July, capping a four-year effort to go public.

The Spin

Narrative A

Shein's dismal debut exposes a business model that regulators, trade policy and competitors have already dismantled. The U.S. killed de minimis exemptions, the EU followed, France is penalizing fast-fashion sales directly, and TikTok Shop is eating into the discount-hunting market Shein once dominated. Losing 73% of peak valuation while posting a $99 million first-quarter loss isn't a rough patch — it's structural collapse.

Narrative B

Shein's Hong Kong debut isn't a death knell — it's a company mid-pivot with real assets still intact. Yes, valuations dropped hard from the 2022 peak, but Shein remains one of the world's largest listed fashion companies, backed by cornerstone investors like Tencent and General Atlantic. The March 2027 lockup expiry is the real test, and dismissing Shein before that moment is premature.
