The Facts

Romanian F-16 fighter jets destroyed an explosive-laden marine drone on Thursday, after it was spotted several hundred meters from the Neptun Deep offshore gas platform in the Black Sea, some 80 nautical miles east of Constanta.

Romanian Defense Minister Radu Miruta said the decision to destroy the drone was made to protect several hundred workers on the platform. Ukraine confirmed via a direct communication channel that the drone was not of Ukrainian origin.

Thursday's incident followed the destruction of two Gerbera-type drones near the same site on Aug. 11. Vice Admiral Mihai Panait identified those as Russian-produced systems, while Romanian forces have neutralized more than 150 mines in the Black Sea.
