Version 7.17.1
Insecurity has become the perfect excuse for a Haitian government that never intended to hand over power. Every now and then brings a shiny new electoral calendar, a freshly rewritten decree and another delay, while hundreds of thousands of dollars flow to foreign lobbyists instead of fixing anything at home. A regime that keeps changing the rules mid-game is manufacturing a permanent transition under the guise of preparing elections.
Waiting for perfect conditions means waiting forever, and Haiti has already burned a decade without a single elected official. But rushing a vote that locks out whole neighborhoods controlled by armed groups would hand power to winners chosen by a sliver of the electorate. Real legitimacy doesn't come from a date on the calendar, it comes from secured roads, a working voter registry and courts that punish the financiers of violence.
