Version 7.7.2
Elections scheduled for August 2026 are a critical step toward restoring democratic legitimacy in Haiti after nearly a decade without a vote. It's up to the international community to reassert its renewed commitment to the country through the U.N.-backed gang suppression mission and provide the security foundation very much needed for Haiti to move forward. Delaying elections further can only perpetuate a transitional government that failed to meet its mandate while denying Haitians their fundamental right to choose their own leaders.
The international community has rushed elections in Haiti for next year, outrageously ignoring the catastrophic reality on the ground as gangs control up to 90% of Port-au-Prince and vast territories beyond. Under these circumstances, it's impossible to carry out a fair and free election. Unless Haiti is able to address its own collapse and restore trust in its institutions while establishing genuine security, any election will merely serve the interests of the dysfunctional status quo, consolidating their power instead of creating the foundation for lasting peace and representative governance.
