The Facts

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced on Saturday that political commentator Milo Yiannopoulos, a British national, was deported to the U.K. after being arrested on Thursday at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in Kenner, Louisiana. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) stated he had legally entered the U.S. on May 14, 2019, through New York City but overstayed his visa.

ICE records show Yiannopoulos was held at a detention facility in Alexandria, Louisiana, a major hub used by the agency for deportation operations. ICE stated he had been issued a final order of removal on July 22.

Yiannopoulos, 41, is a former editor of Breitbart News and served as director of political operations for rapper Kanye West's 2024 presidential campaign. West was scheduled to perform at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on the same evening Yiannopoulos was detained.

Investigative journalist Laura Loomer posted Friday on X claiming she had reported Yiannopoulos to ICE and the FBI after he called for her assassination. Loomer stated she was the first to report that Yiannopoulos was present in the U.S. illegally.

Yiannopoulos had publicly backed ICE operations, posting on X in support of total legal immunity for ICE agents on duty and calling for ICE to be present at polling stations. He also previously interned unpaid for former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, and claimed to possess a hard drive with compromising material on prominent public figures.

Yiannopoulos grew up in Kent, England, and called himself the "most fabulous supervillain on the internet." He rose to prominence as a political commentator and was uninvited from the 2017 CPAC conference after footage emerged of him appearing to condone sexual relationships with 13-year-old boys, after which he resigned from Breitbart.

Milo Yiannopoulos being taken into ICE custody is what should happen when someone overstays a visa and uses that time to slander and divide conservatives. Milo systematically targeted prominent America First figures with lies and zero evidence, doing real damage to a political movement. Getting deported is the right outcome for someone who abused American hospitality to run what amounts to a foreign interference operation.

The celebration over Milo's ICE detention feels suspiciously convenient for those who'd rather see him gone than confront the information he claims to possess. Milo has long maintained that he's never been sued because he gets his facts right, and powerful people in right-wing media circles are well aware of the material he has on them. Silencing someone through deportation is a lot easier than letting the evidence come out through discovery.
