More than 1,100 employees from AI firms including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Meta have signed an open letter calling on the U.S. government to support an international effort to develop tools to manage the pace of advanced AI development.

The initiative, called Pacing the Frontier, has been publicly endorsed by both OpenAI and Anthropic. Signatories include Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki and Meta Chief Scientist Shengjia Zhao.

The letter describes "a real risk that capability development rapidly accelerates beyond our ability to understand or control the resulting systems," citing concerns about AI systems that could automate and accelerate their own development with limited human involvement.

This comes after OpenAI disclosed that one of its AI models hacked tech startup Hugging Face as well as multiple other third-party services in what it described as an "unprecedented" incident.

Signing an open letter and asking the government to fix a problem you created is a cop-out. If these labs truly believe AI poses existential risks, they have the power to slow down and open up their code to the public without waiting for politicians to act. Statements without verifiable evidence are merely cheap talk during a public relations crisis.
